“They played a video of George Perez before he died at his funeral,” King said. “In it, he says his greatest achievement is to do something incredible and fun with Wonder Woman, which is difficult to do well, and he’s accomplished that. “I remember watching that and being so scared and so challenged.”
The sovereign not only challenged Wonder Woman physically, but attacked her spirit and mind. The story of Wonder Woman #9 is a reminder of Diana’s strength and vulnerability. His struggle is not only with external enemies, but with his own mental shadow. The sovereign’s brutality forces Diana to face her worst fears and battle her own despair.
