Reseña de Tokyo City Warriors 1, de Toshiaki Yamada

EDITORIAL HYDRA brings us the biggest fighting tournament in Japan, Tokyo City Fighters. The Yamanote subway line is getting ready for battle!

Toshiaki Yamada

The popularity of manga in Spain has led to works of all kinds and colors, but even with all this great diversity, the classic and the traditional never fail. Editorial Hydra has started publishing Tokyo City Fighters, featuring pure Bucky Grappler style fighting.

Fighting sleeves? over here

After World War II, a fighting tournament was organized to maintain order in the city of Tokyo. Participants in this competition represent each station on the Yamanote subway line, controlled by a neighborhood, clan, or organization, which sends an agent known as Yojimbo. Far from being a sporting or friendly competition, the competition has a hidden secret, and this year there is a special event that will make everyone want to win at any cost.

Tokyo City Warriors

The main character of this manga is Koinosuke Yasuda, a yojimbo from the Kanda neighborhood, one of the poorest and humblest areas in all of Tokyo. In this volume, our champion faces very unique opponents, such as a strange merchant or a warrior obsessed with pandas, who manage to make the first opponent the most ordinary person in the world.

In case it’s not clear, this is not a realistic work, we have absurd characters and improbable displays of strength here; For example, parking a car using drumsticks to play taiko. Every now and then, this ridiculousness is planned to create the most improbable, but also amazing, fight scenes. We are dealing with a work that focuses on combat, where we see examples of techniques and absurd powers. All this means that we get very funny scenes, but at best, scenes like Bucky or the first issues of Dragon Ball are worthy of martial arts competitions, so fun is guaranteed.

Although the story isn’t the important thing, Yamada doesn’t ignore it and at least gives us the context of the world. On the other hand, it gives us enough information about the characters that appear in the chapter, no matter how ridiculous and strange they are.

In Tokyo City Warriors, the action is crucial, so the picture is the main character, which is more than complete. The design and finish of the characters is good in all the movies, in addition to the picture, we see the action, speed and danger of the two mixes in this first volume. Perhaps the negative point about the picture are the backgrounds that sometimes feel empty.

Tokyo City Warriors Edition by Editorial Hydra

Hydra did a great job adapting Koinosuke Yasuda’s manga. We are looking at very well cared for, hardcover manga with dust jackets. With a size of 13×18 cm, the dimensions allow for comfortable and trouble-free reading, with enough space between the pages. With a total of 192 pages, this first volume sells for €8.95.

Tokyo City Warriors by Hydra is a very interesting bet. A manga that loves a good fight will not disappoint. Far from trying to take itself seriously, the work leaves us with mirror images using the irony of the struggle and the characters.
