Marvel Omnibus Review - Aliens: The First Phase 2

The legend of Aliens expands in a second huge volume in the Marvel Omnibus published by Panini Comics

With the first edition of this collection of xenomorph stories, Panini Comics managed to awaken a taste for dark galactic adventures among its readers, with a high degree of terror and action, delighting fans of the film saga. Now, with the second volume coming to us under the title Marvel Omnibus – Aliens: The Original Stage 2, the stakes are higher…

Alien Anthology

As with the first volume, here we can imagine that we will find a sequence of stories that try to expand the universe created by Ridley Scott four decades ago and play with concepts expressed in your films. Ellen Ripley is not there (this is not entirely true), but her presence is not necessary to enjoy the stories that combine the terror caused by the existence of creatures such as xenomorphs with the brutal nature of humanity, we can only pray that we will destroy our species as soon as possible.

We’ll find everything from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, which has been scrapped for reprints in general, to pure action-adventure comics trying to reinvent an overused franchise. There are great chapters that are so memorable and so on, we have authors out there because no one has found better and other great names whose work is in a field that is relatively far from their comfort zone in admiration and wonder.

But above all, we have a huge volume that will not only be enjoyed by fans of the creatures that give it its name, but will also appreciate strong emotions, refreshing humor and at the same time working readers. A level two below the mainstream of the major American comic publishers.

Adventures in space

For a full year, in twelve episodes of two pages each, Dark Horse Comics published a story that would later be collected in a one-shot titled Earth Angel, with the legendary John Byrne in charge. The script and the picture. The story takes place in the 1950s and features a xenomorph who, due to his physical characteristics, appears to have been found in a non-human specimen. In fact, its strange style and lack of visual appeal make this story a curiosity rather than something to admire in its quality.

Peter Milligan teamed up with realist artist Paul Johnson on a story, Sacrifice, that in some ways would be typical of Predator and yet remind us of Alien 3’s plot in terms of its claustrophobic atmosphere and the importance of faith, something we find in Salvation, a story that is undoubtedly more graphic. In it, Dave Gibbons acts as a storyteller whose art is provided by Mike Mignola, Kevin Nowlan and Matt Hollingsworth.

In Labyrinth we meet Dr. Paul Church, famous for abandoning animal experiments to focus on the use of xenomorphs as guinea pigs. His assistants start dying, which shows that the good doctor likes to play god. Jim Woodring, Killian Plunkett and Ryder Windham direct a story where the xenomorphs are more victims than killers.

On the negative side, maybe we should talk about the Colonial Marines, a story that’s probably been passed over by so many writers, the ending is a pointless mess. Drawing is also a regular part so it’s a very useful introduction to the starting point and an introduction to the xenomorphs we haven’t seen yet.

Among these and other stories, we have one in which a new alien race plays a major leading role and two miniseries written by the great John Arcudi, who always manages to ensure that the works are of low quality (at least from the point of view of the plot) and it does not disappoint here.
