Warlock: Rebirth review

Adam Warlock

Panini Comics publishes Warlock: Renacimiento, a series in which Ron Marz and Ron Lim want to tell a new galactic story with a certain nostalgic air.

When talking about Adam Warlock, it is almost obligatory to mention another name, Jim Starlin. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby may have been the creators of the character in 1967, but it’s arguably Starlin who created it. Not only did Starlin use it frequently, but his self-created self, Thanos, used it. The Mad Titan and Warlock have gone through countless lives, perhaps best remembered for the Infinity Gauntlet series and its two sequels. Pip the Troll, Gamora, Drax and the rest of the Infinity War, as well as the legendary Mar-Vell, were recurring characters in Starlin’s space adventures.

All these characters and some more appear in Warlock: Rebirth. Small episodes scripted by Ron Marz and drawn by Ron Lim. It is no coincidence that these artists are the creators of this venture, Ron Lynn worked with Starlin on Cosmic Sagas and the same goes for Lynn, who draws The Infinity Gauntlet with Jorge Perez. Screenwriter and artist come together to tell a new space story that pays homage to those great adventures of the past.

Rebirth of the Warlock

The Warlock and Infinity Guard are responsible for guarding the Infinity Stones. One day Janis-Vell, the son of the famous Captain Mar-Vell, during a meeting with Silver Wake (Silver Wake: Rebirth) suggested that he find Warlock on Earth to tell him about his father. But this meeting is interrupted by the appearance of an extremely powerful being: Eve Warlock, a female version of Adam but seemingly “more perfect”. Such is the strength of this character, he manages to defeat Janice, Pip the Troll, Gamora and steal the Soul Gem from Adam. After this event, he embarks on a space adventure with the goal of recovering the pearl.

Marz isn’t trying to create a comic book adventure. He seems to know that what he has at hand is a short series that liberally indulges the nostalgia of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it-is-it-is-it-is-it-house-of-it’s-super-space department. This is an entertaining series with a script reminiscent of clinical stories and a brisk pace. The author took the liberty to take a nod from a certain alien character from “Special Race” and make some very funny pages using two of Marvel’s most popular characters.

Ron Lynn’s picture is the same as the script, not a poster. It’s not an ugly picture and you can’t say it’s bad, in fact it’s a picture that many people like, but the problem is that it’s nothing spectacular, it serves the purpose of telling a story visually. Romulo Fajardo Jr. is the head of color and I have to say as Ron’s painting.
