ECC Ediciones publishes Suicide Squad: Destroy Arkham Asylum, a prequel to the latest game in the Batman saga.
Like the Injustice: Gods Among Us games, DC Comics has published a comic series inspired by the publisher’s characters that serves as a prequel to a new video game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a game where we take control of DC villains. The goal of doing what is stated in the title.
Suicide Squad: Origins
Because Suicide Squad takes place five years after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight, the prequel can’t begin anywhere else than Arkham Asylum.
We look at how asylum is now controlled by government approval, Argus, an organization led by Amanda Waller. We see how inmates like Captain Boomerang, King Shark, Deadshot and Harley Quinn fare in the renovated asylum. At the same time, we see familiar faces like Jim Gordon (now the mayor of Gotham), Amanda Waller, and Batman himself and other characters from the late rogues gallery, although this seems more like a series reference than anything else.
But due to some circumstances, the metropolis has fallen into chaos, but there is something worse, there is no sign of people who can solve such a disaster, the Justice League. No one knows where Earth’s greatest heroes are. In such a situation, Amanda Waller has an emergency plan, the first step seems to be to release all the prisoners.
If the title leaves any doubt, this comic seems to tell the story of how the game’s Suicide Squad was formed. This first issue, written by John Lyman, is a presentation of the characters that we will see in the future in Kill the Justice League, which is why their design is similar to the one in the video game, even their personalities are similar and generate a few. Funny situations. Not everyone has the same available time and as it turns out, Harley Quinn and King Shark literally eat up the scenes they’re in. In the reviews of the game, the personality of the characters and the chemistry of the team are unanimously praised, which is no different in this comic.
Of course, there are many steps involved in this as well. As Waller and Argus now control Arkham, putting so many super criminals in one place is usually not a very good idea, some unexpected events can happen.
The painting is by Jesus Hervas of Spain. The artist does a good job, even if it seems a bit irregular at times. There are wines that look great, but then there are others that seem to need a little more time to finish. For example, in some of the vignettes in which Jim Gordon appears, he notes that the character’s design is unfinished. Although this could be due to his work with light and shadows, combining dark and gloomy settings with the bright light of Arkham. Even with these weaknesses, he does it and the readers love it.
Suicide Squad: Arkham Asylum Case No. 1 of 5 in ECC editions
The ECC publishes this five-issue Ministries in its original format, a standard 24-page printed magazine. Perhaps the price of €5 is surprising because of the format and the number of pages, but this is a game-based comic and comes with a series of promotional codes that are used in the game. These codes will also appear in future releases, creating a great opportunity for fans of the game who want to get new content for the game and learn more about its story.
Suicide Squad: Arkham Asylum v. 1 is still a product designed to sell using Suicide Squad: Killing Justice League. The Injustice jokes are also there for the purposes of the series and have worked well, so only time will tell if this series is worth it or not. For now the story isn’t bad and the graphics are pretty good.
