Meet the first cast members who joined Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and who you’ve seen before

In an interview at SXSW 2024, producer Alex Kurtzman revealed some exciting news about the highly anticipated sequel Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Paramount has officially announced actors Carys Brooks, Bella Shepard and George Hawkins as the first cast of this new space adventure. Although details about their characters have yet to be revealed, we do know that they will be playing cadets at the academy. Set in the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery, this series is aimed at a younger audience and occupies a unique space between Prodigy and Underworld.

“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy introduces viewers to a group of young cadets who come together to pursue a shared hope and optimism. Under the watchful and inquisitive eyes of their instructors, they learn what it takes to become a Starfleet officer as they experience growing friendships, explosives, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens the Academy and the Federation.

With Brooks, Shepard and Hawkins, the cast of Starfleet Academy promises to be amazing. Oscar winner Holly Hunter will play the academy’s captain and chancellor, and Emmy winner Paul Giamatti will be the season’s villain. Additionally, Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau will serve as showrunners and executive producers. Gaia Violo, who wrote the original episode, also joins an all-star production team that includes Aaron Byers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Webber. Lower Decks Tawny Newsom joins the writers’ room to add humor.

Each new recruit to Starfleet Academy is a rising star with impressive credits to their name. Carys Brooks is a professional actress and dancer, and recently made her film debut in My Old Ass and the 70s comedy Feeling Randy. You’ve probably seen her in Prom, On My Block or How We Roll. Bella Sheppard, best known for her lead role in Paramount’s Wolf Pack series alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, has starred in Wilds, Grace and Frankie and the new iCarly reboot. Finally, George Hawkins is best known for his role in Tell Me Everything and has starred in Boiling Point and Gas Up.

With filming set to begin this summer, anticipation for Starfleet Academy continues to grow.
