Ash’s Pokémon isn’t Pikachu with the best character arc.

Many of Ash’s Pokemon in the Pokemon anime have had some interesting character arcs over the years, but Ash Gom stands out as one of the best arcs in the series, even surpassing the likes of Pikachu. Gumi’s growth in dealing with difficult issues and overcoming them to become a true hero will be a model for young viewers.

Ash first met Goomy in the “Sliding Collision” episode of Pokemon XY, where he literally fell from the sky and landed on Ash’s head. Gomi is a companion of Deden, a Fairy-type Pokémon, and it is eventually revealed that Gomi once lived in the nearby wetlands. Fairy-type flowers.

Goomi and his swamp friends are easily defeated, and the bug types arrive at Goomi’s house. Gomi is weak and terrified from this traumatic experience, afraid to even try to fight.

Goomy appears to have PTSD-like flashbacks to the event, causing him to become frozen and unable to act in battle. Ash helps Gomi overcome this and focus his mind on the moment. Although Ash is constantly described as “the weakest type of dragon”, he clings to Gomi and helps him grow. When Dedene gets into trouble after running away, he goes out of his way to save Gummy, allowing Gummy to realize that not all Fairy-types can hurt him. As Goomy grows more confident in his abilities, he evolves into Sliggoo and then Godra, easily becoming one of Ash’s strongest Pokemon.

In the two-part episodes “Defense the Country” and “Beyond the Rainbow”, Goodra returns to her wetlands, but even though she has grown up, she is still not shocked by the thought of being there. Although he’s happy to see his friends again, the area is still controlled by Flouges and Bug-types. Ash is desperate to avoid interfering in a territorial dispute between wild Pokemon, but Godra uses his newfound power to allow him to take over their home. During the fight, it is revealed that Flouges only raids swamps to get special healing water for the sick Flotte.

Goodra is able to put aside previous grudges and work with Florges to get rid of Team Rocket, while Goodra’s Rain Dance causes water to flow, filling the special healing pool after Team Rocket is dumped. Seeing how far Ash Gudra has come, the now fully reformed Gudra decides to leave the housekeeper and split up. Goomy receives a full character arc in his relatively short stint in the anime (and eventually joins Ash), all dealing with difficult topics that kids watching the show may face in real life. Goomy’s arc is handled exceptionally well, and serves as proof that Pokemon anime can actually have some great writing.
