The golden age of mutation

In the year By the mid-1970s, the mutants were brilliant enough to continue publishing their adventures, but without enough success to be considered an underrated series. Then Lane Wayne came up with a special anniversary edition where new characters from all over the world joined the team.

On the cover it featured characters who today are considered in most cases to be true accessory icons, some with more respect than the original team. So we had Wolverine, Storm, Thunderbird, Nightcrawler and Colossus. The story involved the island of Krakow (which has become very fashionable in recent years when Jonathan Hickman was the mastermind behind the mutant franchise) and brought together known and unknown mutants.

And not only is this story a triumph of Dave Cockrum’s creative art, but it represents a revolution in the emergence of mutant patriarch Mr. Chris Claremont as the main writer of these characters. And it is he who takes over Wayne after this success, in the following series of issues where our heroes face Count Nefaria and, like many characters in the X Mansion, suffer from their initial greatness. Loss, Thunderbird.

Mutations with edges

Claremont’s greatest contribution to the series is the increasingly fleshed-out cast of characters that readers appreciate as three-dimensional entities whose identities are well-defined. This aspect, the obsession with opening up new arcs that could develop or grow in the long run (not always a good thing) was the basis of soap opera comics as superhero adventures.

In the comics collected in this collection, you can find the foundations of the legend of the group on which all the plots of the next decade will be built, whose influence has reached to recent times. But we have to give his due credit to another author we haven’t mentioned yet, the legendary John Byrne. The Canadian-based British author started out as a cartoonist and soon became the writer of the series, whose contributions have been fundamental to its success.

The return of the dreaded Sentinels, the first flirtation with the Phoenix, the arrival of the unstoppable Juggernaut, the rise of Magneto as an absolute villain, adventures in the barbarian land, the Proteus saga or the introduction of Alpha Flight would be just a few. Unforgettable moments lived in this glorious period.

Collector’s Edition

The volume also includes some issues from other series, theoretically related to Future Mutants but could have been largely avoided, but not due to lack of quality. In this way we will have Spiderman, Iron Fist, Hercules and the famous Roger Stern with the angry Hulk.

It is important to emphasize the capital importance these comics had in the dynamic franchise, superhero comics, and the ninth art in general. From their impact on the future of Marvel Comics, to their legacy in film and television series, to their more or less successful adaptations of their formula and adaptations to other authors and other characters, their impact on publications.

As for the amazing edition, this deluxe edition, published by Panini Comics in hardcover with dust jacket, contains 1008 high-quality color pages of 18.3 x 27.7 cm. And includes the American edition of the issues Giant-Size X-Men #1, The X-Men #94-#128 and Annual 3, The Incredible Hulk Annual #7, Iron Fist #14 and #15, The Marvel Team. – Covers #69, #70 and #89 and material from Marvel’s Treasury issue #26.

We have to highlight the unique and amazing cover that the volume has under the dust jacket, mimicking the original design of the legendary cover we see on it. It also includes articles by Claremont and Stan Lee, the original covers of all the issues included in the series, letters from early readers, and a huge section at the end of nearly seventy pages.
