Marvel Heroes Review. Daniel Road Massacre 1 - Secret Invasion

Daniel Way has already left us a stage with the carnage between the legends of the characters, and now Panini Comics collects it in the Marvel Heroes line, starting with Secret Invasion as the main content.

Good old Wade Wilson is a very popular character these days, thanks in part to the great work by actor Ryan Reynolds (no, not in that Wolverine movie, but in the Deadpool franchise) and in part to the reception his comics have had over the past three decades. Specifically, when Daniel Way took over the character, we had to go back to 2008 to see Carnage begin to gain popularity that he hadn’t experienced with Rob Liefeld since his early days. Now Panini Comics has restored Wayne’s platform in deluxe volumes as Marvel Heroes. Daniel Road Massacre 1 – The first title of Secret Invasion.

Daniel Way, American Garth Ennis

Way began working for Marvel Comics in the early part of this century as a recruit for Axel Alonso. Three of the early works that caught the attention of readers (and not just them) between 2005 and 2006 are worth noting.

These were the limited series Bullseye: Greatest Hits, Maximum Power: Nighthawk and Punisher Vs Bullseye, all three with the great Steve Dillon. In all of them he showed a wonderful sense of macabre humor, extreme anger and a distorted taste for ultraviolence, many British children will remember the horror of Garth Ennis, perhaps his collaboration with Dillon is crucial in this regard.

With these small successes, his name is chosen to take charge of the new Wolverine series, where his past life is recalled and his memories come back to him and we see his son Daken and his return. nuke. And we also see a certain mer-mouth appear as an antagonist in a story of pure action.

Wolverine vs Deadpool

As you know, one of the movies that fans are looking for right now is the third installment of Deadpool, and Reynolds has convinced Hugh Jackman to take on the character of Logan again. Although not much is known about the plot, it is expected that we will see these two characters talking to each other even though they end up teaming up to face a common enemy. Well, Wei had that idea years ago…

This volume opens with Wolverine’s story arc, with a weak pretext (although there’s an interesting scene at the end) where we see these two professional assassins face off against each other in a truly brutal way on the page. The good thing when you have a reason to restore is that you don’t value keeping your interior in leather like the rest of the world, and in Wei’s hands, this idea is very interesting.

With Dillon, not doing a fantastic job as in other cases, always funny in these kinds of stories, Way tries to do something similar to what we saw in the aforementioned Punisher Vs Bullseye. Maybe it’s because Deadpool didn’t quite hit the mark with this first character interaction, or maybe it’s because Frank Castle’s story was so good, but the truth is, even though he did a good job, he didn’t quite get it. Meeting the high demands that can be expected with this type of plot.

The voices forced Wade to do it

This first contact with Aph should please the road as the next regular series he directs is his own. In this case, the screenwriter, working mainly with Paco Medina, tried to preserve the aspects of the character that made him a favorite of many readers, but at the same time made small innovations that improved these aspects.

Wei tries to rationalize Wade’s madness by giving voice to the voices arguing in his head, giving the reader some personality and coherence to create chaos in a mercenary way. And all this without losing the meta character that has always accompanied it.

This character is an ideal vehicle for the character’s series to function as a tie-in for major events in the Marvel Universe. So we will have an arc dedicated to a secret invasion in which he will face the Skrulls and get on the nerves of Nick Fury and decide the Dark Reign, where he will be hunted by Thunderbolts and test the sanity of Norman Osborn.

But perhaps the best moment of the numbers included here is when Bullseye appears, a character the writer knows how to handle as well as anyone before. Kudos to you for the good taste that remains when you reach the end of this volume and your desire to continue Wade’s adventures when the next one arrives.

Published in hardcover by Panini Comics, the deluxe size 17 x 26 cm edition contains 472 full-color pages, and the US edition includes the first twelve issues of the regular series The Origins of Wolverine, #21 through #25. regular series Deadpool and issues #130 and #131 of the regular series Thunderbolts. The volume includes an intro by Pedro Monje and a complete bonus section at the end of the volume. It has a recommended retail price of €47 and went on sale in March 2024.
