Glenn Powell has decided to make a Captain Planet movie

Actor and screenwriter Glenn Powell has brought alive the flame of passion to bring the eco-superhero Captain Planet to the big screen. Teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio, they both share a strong commitment to this project that seeks to highlight the importance of environmental awareness.

A project full of nostalgia

The original Captain Planet was an animated series that left an indelible mark on the 90s, influencing an entire generation. Now, fans of this eco-warrior are eager to see how the long-awaited film adaptation goes.

In an interview with Collider’s Perry Nemiroff, Powell and Adria Arjona were promoting their film Hit Man when the topic of Captain Planet came up. “God, I hope so,” Powell said, clearly excited. Trust me, we’ve been working hard on this for a long time. “I’m optimistic about the future, but you never know at the end.”

Powell, who grew up in the 90s, has been associated with this project since 2018. Despite the long development process, the Top Gun: Maverick actor remains committed to writing and acting under DiCaprio’s Appian Way production. Last year, Powell confirmed that the film was still in development at Warner Bros., although the studio acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding its current DC Comics properties. “I’ll have to see where the whole superhero thing falls,” commented Powell.

A common love for the environment

In a previous interview with ET, Powell highlighted his and DiCaprio’s shared love of the environmentally-minded superhero. “I know DiCaprio is passionate about it. Me too. I think it could be great… I want it to work. I’d love to play that superhero,” Powell said.

Conceived by media mogul and environmentalist Ted Turner, the animated series Captain Planet and Planets appeared in 1990. The plot follows a diverse group of teenagers, planets, who receive elemental powers from Gaia, the spirit of Earth. Their mission is to face a variety of eco-villains, from mad scientists to mutant rats and aliens. When the threats become too great, the planets join forces to find Captain Planet, a blue-skinned, green-haired superhero with a fierce determination to save the environment.

The series features an impressive voice cast including Meg Ryan, Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Sheen, Jeff Goldblum and LeVar Burton. The series, which ran for six seasons from 1990 to 1996, produced 113 episodes and left a lasting impression on the audience, many of whom are now looking forward to the return of Captain Planet.

Today’s importance of Captain Planet

Captain Planet’s importance has not diminished over time. In an age where climate change and environmental degradation are pressing issues, the narrative of a superpower fighting for the environment resonates more than ever. Powell and DiCaprio’s commitment to this project demonstrates their desire to not only entertain, but to educate and inspire new generations about the importance of protecting our planet.

As Powell continues to work on the script and explore the complexities of film production, fans will be left with hope. The Captain Planet project is a big gamble, but with the commitment of its main figures, there are reasons to be optimistic about its reality. As the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, a superhero like Captain Planet may be just what we need to inspire positive change.
