While the cinema world eagerly awaits the new live-action version of Disney’s “Snow White,” rumors and criticism will not last long. After a week of eagerly awaiting some footage from the DC presentation at CinemaCon, there was only an echoing silence. Despite completing production and extensive reshoots, nothing was seen, sowing doubt and speculation among fans and critics alike.
A new view
In a twist to the traditional narrative, the film contains a series of shots that initially confused the audience. These images feature actors of normal height in their period costumes, leading many to speculate that they replaced the familiar Seven Dwarfs.
However, Disney was quick to clear the water by publishing an official photo of Snow White with CGI dwarves. According to insider Daniel Richman, the characters in the set photos became a “rogue” team brought together by Andrew Burnap’s character, Jonathan Prince, to replace him. The new Snow White, played by Rachel Zeigler, is accompanied by her seven dwarf friends, although they are not mentioned as such.
Richman also revealed that the new Snow White will be “more independent and lead a rebellion against the evil witches.” In addition, it promises a “different” twist on the classic poison apple ingredient, although no further details have been provided.
Is it success or failure?
Although the film was said to be a success with test audiences calling it “excellent”, not everyone agrees. Empire City Box Office disputed these claims and reported that the film “is really struggling and underperforming despite the reboot”. My own sources have confirmed this suspicion, predicting an uncertain future for the film.
The look was not well received when it was first released to the press, and although it officially changed the “visual thing” into something completely different, reactions were mixed. David Hand, whose father directed the original “Snow White” with Walt Disney in 1937, called the remake “blasphemy,” suggesting that the original creators would be “turning in their graves.”
From animation to live action
Amidst this context of reinvention, Rachel Zeigler faces a huge challenge in bringing life to the mold-breaking Snow White. Not only is she the face of rebellion, but her performance is determined and self-reliant as she tries to distance herself from the damsel in distress. This new look is not only an update of the character, but a retelling that aims to resonate with contemporary audiences who value dedication and female strength.
Furthermore, Disney’s decision to invest in a production of this magnitude shows their confidence in adapting these classic stories to remain relevant. Despite the financial risks and criticisms, Snow White’s commitment to modernity and combat could turn this film into a film about how classics evolve, attracting new generations and meeting the expectations of modern audiences.

Zeigler expressed his excitement about the new direction the story took, particularly highlighting the opportunity to “whistle at work.” However, he also shared how challenging it was to work with so many CGI and puppet elements on the set. “I spent most of the day without singing at all,” he says, “there’s a lot of villains where I throw brooms on the floor because that way you have to interact with CGI characters. But it’s a lot of fun.”
With an astronomical budget and at least $340 million in losses to survive, Disney is facing a potential milestone or major financial collapse. The film is slated to hit theaters on March 21, 2025. Meanwhile, the fan and fan community is divided: Will “Snow White” be a new jewel in Disney’s crown or a masterpiece in its vast film catalog? Only time will tell.
