As Netflix pushes for more Violent Moon episodes, Zack Snyder is looking forward to returning to the zombie universe.

In the current landscape of science fiction and action cinema, Zack Snyder finds himself at a creative crossroads. Known for his unique vision and strong aesthetic, the director is torn between continuing to expand the Netflix-powered Rebel Moon universe or rebooting his zombie franchise, Army of the Dead.

Snyder’s dilemma

During a recent interview with Looper, Snyder shared his inner conflict: “I keep telling Netflix we have to do more. [Army of the Dead] And they continue to inspire me to create more Rebel Moon films. The director’s choice to return to the post-apocalyptic world is obvious, especially considering the enduring appeal of zombies in popular culture. “The army universe is really rich and interesting, and zombies never go out of style, so it’s clear to me what we have to do,” he explained.

Despite the distribution platform’s enthusiasm for the space saga, the reception of these films has been far from unanimous. The first film failed on Rotten Tomatoes with an approval rating of 21 percent, and the sequel dropped to a disappointing 15 percent. However, viewership numbers tell a different story, as the first film has nearly 90 million views, according to information shared by Snyder. This makes for a fascinating contrast: the critics don’t support it, but the public seems to.

The journey of Korra, who is a hero in the world

Snyder’s space opera Cora (played by Sofia Boutella), after a crash landing on a distant moon, plunges us into a galactic narrative where the farmers’ only hope for a peaceful settlement. As the story unfolds, Cora and a group of warriors seek to defend their new home from the oppressive forces of Regent Balisarius and his ruthless emissary, Admiral Noble. The film weaves a tapestry of loyalty, sacrifice and redemption that resonates deeply in Snyder’s cinema.

Although Snyder has expressed his desire to continue making more Rebel Moon films, the future of these and Army of the Dead is uncertain. The director has already mentioned that he is working on the third space saga, which suggests that regardless of criticism, he is willing to delve deeper into this universe. “We know where we’re going with the story. We’ve been clear about it for a long time,” he enthused.

As Snyder ponders his next move, fans are divided between his cinematic universe. On the one hand, the prospect of more Rebel moon landings promises an expanding cosmos that is already visually stunning and narratively ambitious. On the other hand, Return of the Zombies offers a new opportunity to immerse yourself in an action-packed and intense zombie apocalypse. No matter which direction Snyder takes, it seems his audience’s interest is assured, with new worlds to explore and old concerns preserved.

Celebrated for his visually stunning style and intricate narratives, Zack Snyder has left an indelible mark on various film genres. Aside from these two films, Snyder has also directed notable works such as 300, in which he revived the epic genre with its depiction of the Battle of Thermopylae.

In the realm of superheroes, his DC Universe trilogy, Iron Man, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the director’s cut of Justice League, have created darker and deeper debates about these iconic characters. Each of Snyder’s films explores ambitious themes and bold aesthetics, capturing the attention of global audiences and sparking deep conversations among fans and critics alike.
