Why was Thor crying in Deadpool and Wolverine?

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine finally hit theaters after months (if not years) of hype, and if the box office results are anything to go by, it delivered the wild and entertaining ride fans were hoping for. While almost everyone was happy as they left the theater, one question has been asked in conversations and on social media ad nauseam: why was Thor crying?

At this point, Dead Pool & Wolverine As for the release cycle, everyone has the answers they’ve been looking for regarding the film’s cameos, Deadpool’s role in the MCU, and other story developments, but the reason Thor was shedding tears over Deadpool’s seemingly deceased (or dying) body is the one thing Marvel has left shrouded in secrecy. Here are the four most likely explanations for this potentially game-changing moment.

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is teasing the possibility of an extended version of the Merc With a Mouth’s latest cinematic outing.

First, here’s a little reminder for those who blinked and missed it or who would like to know what it’s about without having seen the movie first. The scene in question takes place at the beginning of the film. Deadpool and Wolverine. After arriving at the TVA (Time Variances Authority) headquarters, Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) and Mr. Paradox (played by Matthew Macfayden) are deep in conversation about Deadpool’s quest to become Marvel’s new Jesus. At least, that’s how Deadpool sees it. In reality, Mr. Paradox is recruiting him to be a part of the MCU because Wade Wilson is destined to do something big in the future.

Much to everyone’s surprise, especially the audience, the moment Mr. Paradox appears to be referring to appears on a nearby TVA monitor. Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) can be seen kneeling over Deadpool’s battered and bruised body, shedding tears. Noticing what is happening, Deadpool naturally asks Mr. Paradox why Thor is crying. Rather than answer the question, Mr. Paradox seems perturbed that Deadpool saw this and quickly tries to remove him from the monitors, saying:

“Let’s not get carried away, this will happen in the distant future.”

Of course, this is not an acceptable response to the Mercenary with a Mouth, and he will continue to refer to this moment throughout the rest of Dead Pool & Wolverine. For what it’s worth, this moment was not shot explicitly for this film. Instead, the scene is repurposed stock footage first seen in Thor: The Dark World of Thor shedding a tear over his brother Loki’s sacrifice (which, notably, is faking). That being said, Ryan Reynolds has hinted that there will be a payoff to this Easter Egg coming to the MCU. Here’s how that could happen.

Reason #1: Deadpool sacrifices himself during the events of Avengers Secret Wars

For reasons we cannot “ignore”

Ryan Reynolds confirms Nicolas Cage cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine almost happened.

The sheer number of times Deadpool references Thor’s tears throughout Deadpool and Wolverine suggests that this wasn’t just a throwaway joke. If so, the most likely outcome of this tease is that it provides a pivotal moment for an upcoming Avengers movie, most likely Avengers: Secret Wars, is expected to be released in theaters in 2027.

For what Avengers: Secret Wars and not the one recently announced Avengers: The End of the World? Well, there are several reasons. First of all, given that doomsday is set to explore Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, this film already has its work cut out for it. Infinity War was of End of game, doomsday is more likely to serve as a basis for Secret Wars, where most of the heroic sacrifices will likely take place.

Of course, the fact that Deadpool legitimately sacrificed his life for the MCU seems a bit too far for a character as inherently unserious as the open-mouthed mercenary, and so many fans aren’t convinced that this sacrifice will happen. Perhaps to combat this (or make us believe it’s a lie), Ryan Reynolds has taken to social media, promising that there is indeed a reason Thor is crying. A reason he can’t “ignore.”

Although he did not know he would appear in Deadpool and Wolverine Up until a few months before the film’s release, actor Chris Hemsworth also took to social media to suggest that this moment was now locked into the upcoming MCU canon while subtly hinting that it might be destined to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars when he wrote: “I can keep secrets too.”

Reason #2: Deadpool and Thor are a future MCU team-up

Comedy and thunder are on the way

A Daredevil Easter egg that went largely unnoticed in Deadpool & Wolverine has been spotted.

Another potential outcome this sequence could tease is an upcoming entry in the dead Pool Or Thor franchises, especially a film featuring both heroes. After all, Thor was arguably the funniest character before Deadpool joined the MCU in earlier phases of the Marvel Universe and would naturally pair well with Wade Wilson.

Thor is reportedly set to star in another upcoming solo film. After the mixed reception to Thor: Love and ThunderPerhaps a refresher with the wildly popular Deadpool is just what the doctor ordered to combat growing superhero fatigue. Considering the number of discs Deadpool and Wolverine has been a box office smash since its release, it seems more than possible. If this collaboration doesn’t materialize in a Thor (or Avengers)-centric film, it will almost certainly materialize in the next Deadpool installment.

Reason #3: Deadpool’s Death in the Sacred Timeline Is Ryan Reynolds’ Exit Plan

In the end, good times always come to an end.

The actor says the possibility of a sequel starring the titular duo is not likely.

If Hugh Jackman taught his good friend Ryan Reynolds anything, it’s that you should always have an exit plan (even if you end up abandoning it). If you take the scene literally (which is hard to take, considering Deadpool), it seems to suggest that Deadpool will sacrifice his life for the good of the MCU and turn a blind eye forever. The question is, why would anyone want that? Or, better yet, who?

If we’ve learned one thing over the past two years, it’s that good times don’t last forever. As Wade Wilson himself joked during Deadpool and Wolverinethe MCU is at a bit of a low point right now, philosophically speaking. Sure, Deadpool and Wolverine could ultimately prove to be the spark that reignited the MCU, but just in case this film’s success is seen as more of an exception than the rule, Ryan Reynolds may already be planning his exit from the franchise.

And if it were true, could we blame him? Ryan Reynolds has been Wade Wilson/Deadpool in some iteration since his debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. He’s been playing Deadpool for over fifteen years now. It’s clear that Reynolds still loves the character and appreciates the opportunity to play him, but at some point, he’s going to want to stop. And when he does, don’t be surprised if you see Thor weeping over his messianic corpse.

Of course

Deadpool and Wolverine Subtly Confirm a Major Secret Wars Fan Theory

Deadpool & Wolverine gives audiences a good look at the Marvel multiverse, but leaves out an important group that could return in Avengers: Secret Wars.

As likely as all of these reasons are, this one is equally likely. Given Deadpool’s meta nature, it’s quite possible that Thor’s crying over Deadpool’s death is just a red herring with no tangible results or effects on the MCU.

Given Avengers: Secret Wars (alleged) multiversal hijinx, there’s even the possibility that the sequence could take place as an alternate version of the previous MCU events that the heroes experience during this film (remember, the sequence itself is reworked from Thor: The Dark World.) If true, Wade would most likely take this moment to turn to the camera and laugh at the audience’s gullibility, which has been expecting this moment to mean so much more for so many years.

Deadpool and Wolverine actor reveals how Ryan Reynolds convinced him to play [Spoiler] Again

A Deadpool and Wolverine star talks about the pitch behind his pre-MCU superhero character’s return and why he loved filming a key R-rated scene.

Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy (the director of (Deadpool and Wolverine) have been surprisingly open about discussing the reveals, cameos, and surprises of their latest film. The one thing they’ve been most reluctant to discuss is why Thor was seen crying. In a conversation with Collider Reynolds’ editor Steve Weintraub was extremely cautious about the timing, saying:

“I know this is the spoiler, Frosty, where I’m supposed to open the dress all the way up and show you the thing. I told you I wouldn’t wear pants and I did. I failed. But we’re gonna… it’s gonna materialize.”

Reynolds also suggested that he and the creative minds behind the MCU will be addressing Thor’s crying in the near future. Avengers: Judgment Day And Avengers: Secret Wars Both are on the way, it’s just a matter of time before we find out. Of course, if Deadpool really is Marvel Jesus, his death will be short-lived either way.
