The following contains mild spoilers for Solar Opposites Season 5, now available to stream on Hulu.

Hulu animated series Solar Opposites was a hit at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Audiences embraced the comedy about an alien family who find themselves on Earth after their home planet is destroyed, forcing them to build a new life full of hilarious antics and unexpected twists. And there will be plenty of developments in the future, as the series has been renewed for season 6.

CBR sat down with executive producers Mike McMahan, Josh Bycel and Sydney Ryan to discuss what’s notable about Season 5. In this interview, the trio discusses the show’s success, what makes it so popular, and what makes it so popular. Solar Opposites They also discussed the most popular storylines fans can expect, including a Western set in the Wall’s backyard.

RBC: Solar Opposites received a tremendous reception at San Diego Comic-Con. How would you describe your experience at the convention and the excitement of your fans?

Mike McMahan:
We were laughing on stage and I could hear the audience laughing too… When you do an animated show, you don’t all spend your time together. One person writes, another records and another directs. Bringing this whole team together is a real pleasure.
My 10 year old son, who plays Pupa, was never allowed to watch
Solar Opposites
because it’s so dirty, and they beep us a lot on it. I brought him to Comic Con to hang out with all of us, and he got to watch his first episode.

It was really special. We also did some stuff with the
Toddland
We visited the booth for the first time. Todd is awesome, what they do is incredible, and it was really special for us. A big thank you to them. It was really cool.

Josh Bycel:
Due to last year’s strike, we’ve only had one full panel in the years we’ve held it. The panel was packed, packed more than ever.
[Korvo voice actor] Dan Stevens was filming in New York, but he did a great video announcing season 6, so that was great. It really felt like we were celebrating this weird little show that we love to do.

Sydney Ryan:
The Hulu activation behind the convention center did a bit
Solar Opposites
The Goobler machine allowed you to see how stressed you were. It was really fun.

You mentioned the renewal of season 6. How much does it cost? Solar Opposites What does reaching season six mean to you?

McMahan:
It’s great. We’ve already written the season, I’m writing the [season] final now.
The Wall story in Season 5 leads to a truly epic Wall story in Season 6.
It’s awesome to be able to do that and watch it play out. Season 5 is hilarious, and now that the aliens are married, we’re telling stories along those lines and it’s so freeing. We’re doing stuff in Season 6 that changes their situation even more. The show is never boring to write. Writing is hard, but we have such a blast that the writing team has been pretty similar since the beginning, as has the art team. It really feels like you’re getting together with all your friends to do another crazy thing.

Have you ever had an idea that Solar Opposites would turn out to be so popular?

McMahan:
Because we were sort of a sister show to
Rick and Morty

and because I had worked on
Rick and Morty
for eight years…we didn’t want to just do another cover song of what
Rick and Morty
Hulu has been really supportive of us, as has 20th, to make a show that no one has ever seen before… Every episode, you don’t know what’s going to happen. We did an episode where they’re all standing in line for the whole episode. We did an episode where they’re invisible and blind. We did an episode where it turns into
Looney Tunes
. We did one where the Wall story starts and takes over completely. I think what’s really special about this show [is] There are two husbands who are the protagonists of an animated family. No one else does that. In our show, it’s one of the most normal things that happens.
Our show is about a gay immigrant couple living in America, and that’s the most normal thing about this show.
I’m really glad people found it. I know our fans are genuine. I feel so honored to be able to make a show that is both so subversive and so funny. Josh and I often talk about how lucky we are and how we don’t know if we’ll ever be able to do something like this again. Because it’s really unique, not just compared to the shows that came before it, but compared to everything else that’s on the air right now.

Bycel:
When I read the script, I didn’t know it was going to be six seasons, but you can tell when something is different and good… It may have been eight episodes and never seen again, but those eight episodes were going to be different.
I also wanted to salute the artists. We entrust them with the creation of three or four mini-series per season (The Wall, Silvercops, specific episodes that we make) and they always rise to the occasion and do an incredible job.
One of my favorite things about Comic Con was seeing the reaction to the episode on the big screen and how incredible it was… When we showed the trailer, at the end of it, the Duke’s hand goes up and you see that the Duke is alive. And people just gasped. That’s all you can ask for is that someone, somewhere, cares about your stupid little thing.

Ryan:
It’s amazing to work on a show since the pilot and see how much it’s evolved. Every season I feel like the writers are outdoing themselves, and it’s getting better and better, even though every season is amazing. The artists are huge fans of the show and I think it really shows.

Can fans expect to see much more of Solar Opposites“the most popular scenarios, like The Wall and Silvercops?

Much of Solar Opposites’ success is due to its unpredictable storytelling, but it’s the incredible voice actors behind the case that make the series.

McMahan:
There’s some really amazing Silvercops in Season 5. There’s a Western that takes place in the back yard of The Wall story. Both stories end in places that set up some really cool things in Season 6.
We love carrying this stuff around with us, but our bread and butter is actually the Solars themselves.
We love telling stories about love and chaos, and everything else is just cream on top. It’s a really fun thing that we get to do in this crazy show.

Is there anything you are particularly looking forward to? Solar Opposites Is Season 5 Coming to Hulu Viewers?

The Solars stand in the driveway of their house with a spaceship on the roof in Solar Opposites

McMahan:
I love seeing fan art. I love seeing what people like; I never really know. Terry and Korvo are so excited for each other, and it’s so fun and funny. It really feels like they’re being allowed to be naturally excited. The fact that Korvo is excited even though he’s bossy makes me laugh a lot.

They are so in love that they change the trajectory of the Earth’s orbit so that their honeymoon can last a few more days. This kind of story really sounds like
Solar Opposites
In my opinion.

I’ve been living with this for a year, because we’ve been doing the show for a year. I can’t wait for people to see it.

Ryan:
I can’t wait for everyone to see the new season. There are some great stories from Jesse and Yumyulack, plus Silvercops, The Wall, and Terry and Korvo. We’re doing so much with Season 5, so I can’t wait for everyone to see it.
