Acclaimed director Joachim Ronning is at the helm of ‘TRON: Ares’, the third installment of the iconic Disney saga. However, this project is not the first attempt to continue the second part of the legendary eighties film. Joseph Kosinski, the director of ‘TRON: Legacy’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, had his own sequel titled ‘TRON: Ascension’.
Rebirth of Revelation: ‘TRON: Ares’ and ‘TRON: Ascension’
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kosinski revealed a fascinating fact: his relationship with Rønning. In this speech, Kosinski revealed that ‘Ares’ shares a partial connection with the defunct version of ‘Ascension’. “I have a little connection with the new movie. I know a little bit about the approach, because it’s partly related to the version of ‘Ascension,’ but from a different perspective. I’m excited to see what they’re doing with it, and I’m excited that ‘TRON’ is still alive,” explained Kosinski.
The plot of ‘TRON: Ares’ focuses on a subconscious program that somehow manages to cross over into the human world. Jared Leto plays Ares, the epitome of the show, in his role as the main character, a video game programmer and tech CEO.
Kosinski has spoken about his vision before. “What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie that’s out of the machine, unlike what we usually see. We hinted at this at the end of ‘Legacy’ with Quorra leaving, but the idea of ’Ascension’ is that the first act is in the real world, the second is in the world of TRON. Or in many TRON worlds and the third was to be fully realized. In the real world.”
I think that really opens up, uses the concept of TRON in a way that’s fun to see on screen. Also, there’s a really interesting character study in Quorra and ‘Alien in a Strange Land’, trying to figure out where she is after living in the real world for a few years.
Quorra: A human-digital hybrid
Kosinski also explained what Kurara, the first human-digital hybrid, could do in the real world. “I don’t see them having superpowers. I don’t see them being able to shoot lasers out of their eyes or doing what I would consider a superhero movie. But in its DNA, like the first human-digital hybrid, there’s something that makes things in the network exist and be permanent in the real world. So that was the idea. “I think the idea is strong, it’s just the right time, the right place and the stars to adjust as they need for the movies.”
The much-anticipated third installment of the saga features an all-star cast led by Jared Leto. Leto takes the lead role as Ares, the embodiment of the TRON program. His character is described as a video game programmer and technology CEO, injecting new life into the franchise. Although the full cast has yet to be revealed, Leto’s presence promises to spark an impressive performance and a revival of the iconic sequel.
This interweaving of visions and concepts between ‘TRON: Ares’ and ‘TRON: Ascension’ promises not only to bring the essence of the franchise to life, but also to give a new direction to the saga.
