This 1 how to train your dragon scene proves what fans have said badly (and it’s actually a good thing)

The new How to train your dragon is finally in theaters, whisking the public in an adventure familiar in this live story of the 2010 classic animated film. Just as its predecessor did fifteen years ago, 2025 How to train your dragon Follows a young Viking boy named Hiccup (Mason Thames) who defies the expectations of his village to befriend a dragon, the sworn enemy of his people. Together, Hiccup and his new friend, Trewmou, have grown to the point of proving that their peoples can coexist, despite their longtime animosity.

The first live restart of any DreamWorks project, fans were naturally cautious about the new How to train your dragonBut the film managed to go beyond expectations. At a time when the public gets tired of the constant remakes live from Disney, critics and fans were surprisingly generous to How to train your dragonsuggesting that the film can do better than some other 2025 films, namely Disney snow White. While many films lovers can still have a problem with the very concept of restarting live animated projects, the new How to train your dragon manages to reverse their negative expectations with a single scene, which turns out to be an important truth about this recent and unpopular Hollywood trend.

The “test drive” sequence of the new How to train your dragon is an almost perfect recreation of the emblematic scene of the original film. Too often, the magic and the wonder of an animated film do not translate properly into live action. It is something with which Disney had difficulties often with regard to her live remakes, which never feel as impressive as the original animation. Fortunately, How to train your dragon Defies this expectation, providing the point of sale of the whole film. The most unquestioned moment of the original How to train your dragon comes halfway from the film, when Hiccup and Krokmou participate in a test flight along the Berk coast.

While the duo gets used to flying together, they make their way through the islands along the shore, justly avoiding an accident landing several times. Just when they seem to understand it, Hiccup slips from his saddle, and they both dive towards the water below. Bringing together mid-fire, the young Dragon coach finds his way on Trownmou, throws his cheating sheet and lets his instinct take over. Supported by John Powell’s masterful partition, Hiccup and Krokmou have finally become one, launches a partnership that ultimately changes the world throughout the trilogy.

If there was a scene that the new How to train your dragon I had to nail, it’s this one. And, fortunately, this is the case. While live remakes are often considered useless, How to train your dragon Justifies its existence by delivering the emblematic moments that fans loved in the original film and making them even more authentic and magical. This is the case with “test drive”. There is something undeniably impressive to see the hiccup and the Plane d’Edenété through the live sky. The Jutting Islands of Berk, crashing with waves along the shore, and the white misty clouds feel so much more real. The live support also gives the film more space to play with different angles and shots, putting the audience in the middle of the action. Better still, John Powell comes back to develop his unforgettable “test drive” score (now entitled “Test Driving Krownmou”), which only improves the already emblematic scene. Like the rest of the film, the sequence is a recreation almost taken from the original, but the live parameter only raises the premise to offer exactly what fans hoped.

After ten years of Disney restarting all its classic properties, the public becomes tighter of live remakes. Recent films like snow White Drawn the anger of the moviegoers while Disney continues to see decreasing returns for its latest initiative. However, How to train your dragon Make a feat that very little lives live from Disney have. The first live restart of DreamWorks captures the magic of the original film, as it is (almost) as good as the original. Even better, the film somehow manages to justify its own existence. Too often, the main reaction to a new live version of an animated classic evokes only one question in response: “Why is this film exists?” With How to train your dragonThis question is not as widespread.

How to train your dragon Leans in its live format to raise the wonder of the original animated film. 2010 How to train your dragon Presents a high world of fantasy, filled with Scottish Vikings and high -flying dragons. Although obviously of fantastic nature, the film is quite close to the real world to be easily recreated live. And, in the modern era of CGI, the dragons of the film can come to life in a credible and realistic way. It only improves the wonder of history, capturing the public in the same way as the original film did. How to train your dragon Use its revised format as a means of highlighting its characters and its history, justifying its own existence in a way that few live remakes have.

What did DreamWorks do well (that Disney did not)?

DreamWorks may have cracked the code on live remakes

How to train your dragonSuccess is not an accident. DreamWorks and Universal have made several key decisions that assured that their live remake would be better received than those of their rival studio, Disney. On the one hand, Universal asked the original DEAN DEBLOIS to come back for the new How to train your dragon film, ensuring that he would have the same tone as the animated film. In an interesting parallel, Deblois also co-directed the original Lilo & Stitch For Disney. The two films received a live remake a few weeks from each other, but only one offered the original director a chance to come back. Deblois confirmed that he had nothing to do with the Lilo & Stitch Remake live, granted to Universal for having asked him to come back How to train your dragon. It was a great decision, because Deblois understands better than anyone who made the original animated film such a success. With him at the helm, Universal and DreamWorks made sure that their live remake would have all the magic and wonder of the original film. The return of other key parts of the animated film, such as the composer John Powell and the stoic actor Gerard Butler, also contributes to the success of the film live.

DreamWorks already plans to develop the success of the live action How to train your dragon franchise. Even before the last film was released in theaters, the studio announced that a remake of How to train your Dragon 2 is in development, with Deblois returning to Direct. Due to 2027, the continuation worked everything in his favor after the success of his immediate predecessor. If How to train your Dragon 2 Follow the same steps, it is sure to be another success for DreamWorks.
