How did Spider-Man spend his free story of comics day?
I know Joe Kelly can do fast stories and do a “Getting to know Spider-Man”. I saw him do it several times. Heck, he did it a few months ago when he wrote a story presenting the heroism of Spider-Man in the latest issue of the incredible Spider-Man by Zeb Wells, where we see that Doctor Doom was supervising Spider-Man, and determined to choose it as his filling for a trial against the Scions of Cyttorak.
And yet, I don’t think it worked really well. For example, much too much was based on the rescue story of Amazing Spider-Man # 1, with the cyborg that attacked Norman Osborn now targeted for assassination by Lord Deathstrike, the brother of Lady Deathstrike. Norman Osborn calls Peter Parker to ask him to help save the guy (because Osborn is a good guy these days), and Peter leaves an appointment with his new girlfriend, Shay, to defend the assassin against his own assassination.
The pages can show the legendary skills of John Romita Jr as an action artist, and therefore the fight between Spider-Man and Lord Deathstrike is certainly well managed, but then he ends, the assassin is moved to a safe place, and Spider-Man returns home to go hug with Shay. I think that more time should probably have to be devoted to Peter and Shay, as Shay, as a new girlfriend (the one who is a nurse in a mental rehabilitation hospital, and therefore knows a lot about some of the psychological problems that Peter deals daily, like all this frightening guilt he carries), is really the best new hook that Kelly could use for new readers. Heck, maybe even Norman Osborn spotlights, but making him call Peter by phone to start the story was so … disconnected. I think Kelly had a good start to the race Amazing Spider-ManBut I don’t think you get a lot of what makes its race well from this news.
