“Because what the creators of the series are really trying to show is that these are all real characters. The evil characters are not just black; they have many shades. The moment he meets Galadriel and the moment he comes back and is reborn, it’s thousands of years ago. First of all, there’s the first Sauron, that’s the first scene thousands of years before. He takes this new form in this place and this creature, thousands of years ago. Then when he becomes Halbrand and meets Galadriel, when he comes back, it’s like six months later, when he’s dressed and he meets the old man on the street.
“When he meets the old man on the road and looks at the dark clouds above the trees and makes the decision to go with the people to the ship, he doesn’t know what he’s going to do yet. You haven’t chosen to become what you’re going to become. I think the choice comes when the sea monster attacks the ship, it starts to sink and the old man asks him for help, but he doesn’t.”
