Star Trek: Lower Decks could draw inspiration from all eras of the franchise, but its early episodes did much to establish the series’ own identity within the Hiking chronology.
A look back at the legacy of the series with Polygonshowrunner Mke McMahan gave insight into how he approached Lower deckThe first season of and found the right comedy-drama balance in its stories and character dynamics. “I knew that the show I must have felt like it happened seven years later Star Trek: Nemesisthat we needed to fit into the timeline both technologically, design-wise, and with all the character attributes that would entail. So that we recognize this as a bit like the last of TNG-shows of the time“, he explained.

McMahan also felt it was essential that each episode involve a “Star Trek story that was happening to the ship and the bridge crew and affecting our Lower Deckers, but that their main storyline was a social, emotional and comedic story drawn from experiences people had at work, in relationships or in the life in your twenties and thirties. So we always had two stories happening at the same time: the big sci-fi story and the “getting to know who you are in life” story.
Season 1 pays homage to Classic Trek
At the same time, McMahan acknowledged that Season 1 emulated “the successes” of Star Trek more compared to future seasons, despite setting the stage for the arcs of Boimler, Mariner, Tendi, Rutherford and the crew of the USS Cerritos. “The first season, it was like we were doing a Star Trek. And then the second season, we understood the characters better. We spent a lot more time with the actors and found stories with the characters. And that’s when we became, “We’re doing a Lower decks,‘” he continued.
