Just after celebrating his tenth birthday, Interstellar is now in streaming for free on YouTube. Directed by the visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan, Interstellar represents a world about to collapse while resources are dangerously decreasing. Knowing that humanity is on its last legs, a Skeleton of NASA is recruiting the former Coop test pilot (Matthew McConaughey) to embark on a mission to find a new native world. To do this, he accepts the risk of time expansion, which threatens to separate him from his children forever.

Interstellar is remarkable for its dazzling visual effects, which, in the typical Nolan style, use the fewest digital creations as possible in favor of more practical film creation stuff. As such, Interstellar is always one of the most visually attractive science fiction films of all time. More importantly, the film has a deeply emotional story with which everyone can identify in one form or another, even if it cannot wrap their heads around the high-level science fiction jargon on which its premise is built.

Kenneth Branagh reinvents Shakespeare’s game

Kenneth Branagh is in Henry V of Shakespeare

Image via Curzon Film Distributors

For many decades, William Shakespeare’s Henry V was considered “Larry’s Play”, due to the famous film production of Sir Laurence Olivier from 1944. He helped rally Great Britain in the middle of the Second World War, telling the story of an unlikely victory of a young English king over the French during the battle of Agincourt. Olivier tackled it like a fairy tale, the British, but were preorded to win, and the bloodshed remained at least absolute. For a country that still fights tooth and nail for its freedom, it has provided an unequaled boost.

He threw such a shadow that other filmmakers feared touching him, until a young Kenneth Branagh chose him like his escape project in 1989. His Henry is much less assured in his quest for the throne of France, with enemies all around him and a superior enemy who, even he suspects that he cannot beat. He delivers the same story with the grain and tragedy of a modern war film, bringing Shakespeare resolutely in the here and now, and expressing his own claim to what was formerly alone of Olivier.

Person loved Greek mythology more than Ray Harryhausen, the hitchhiking effect assistant that has created several versions of classic epics. As well as the years 1981 Titans confrontation1963 Jason and the Argonauts ranks among its best. It presents a reasonably precise version of the legend of the Golden Fleece, while Jason and its team of heroic stars leave all kinds of perils to reach their price at the end. The magic of Harryhausen brings the different supernatural monsters that they face, including a collection of flying harpies and a bronze statue the size of Kaiju.

He saves the best for the end, while King Aeeetes dries a set of dragon teeth to create a squad of living skeletons to kill Jason. The creatures are full of personality and soul, which transcends the artifice of hitchhiking effects to become something special. Few CGI pieces can match it, and the film is as fresh and fun today as over 60 years ago.

Donnie Darko is a dark and surreal mystery

This film has become a classic cult

Jake Gyllenhaal is Donnie Darko in the 2001 film.

Image via flower movies

Of the director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko Follows a young man in difficulty who is starting to have mysterious visions of a man in a rabbit costume named Frank who tells him that the world is about to end. What takes place is a single time travel thriller where Donnie must understand what is going on and how to stop him as Frank’s influence over him grows. Surrealist imaging and the singular dilemma make him frightening and intriguing without immersing himself in the complete horror.

With its gender mixture and its complex route, Donnie Darko became a classic cult when it was released on DVD, and Kelly was able to make a director’s cup a few years after the initial release of the film. Both versions are available to look on YouTube. The film also takes place in October, which makes it a perfect addition to a range of fall films.
