The following contains major spoilers for Superman #20, on sale now from DC Comics.
Superman’s deadliest foe is about to be eclipsed by a far more ominous threat.
Superman Issue #20 picks up where the previous issue left off, with the Man of Steel and Lois Lane facing off against none other than a recently returned Doomsday. By the time the dust settles, Doomsday is down, but Clark and Lois are visibly shaken. For Lois, it comes from surviving the biggest fight of her superhero career to date. For Clark, on the other hand, it comes from the fact that even worse things are to come, and he has no idea how right he is about that, because at least one ominous figure is already watching from the planet Calaton.

First seen in a brief appearance in 1992 Superman: Man of Steel #17 by Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanove, the monstrous Doomsday is an artificially engineered entity born on Krypton long before the rise of the Kryptonians themselves. Doomsday was meant to be the ultimate life form, capable of easily recovering from any illness, injury, or death. Every time Doomsday is taken down, he returns with a new immunity to that same threat, constantly transforming into more powerful and dangerous versions of himself with each iteration.
Most recently, a future iteration of Doomsday revealed himself to Superman as a version of the Time Trapper. This particular role has been held by many villains over the years, with the original Time Trapper being introduced in 1964. Adventure comics #317 in Edmond Hamilton and John Forte’s opening story, “Legion of Super-Heroes: The Menace of Dream Girl!”. This Time Trapper debuted as a time-displaced warlord from a dark vision of the future, far from the calm, contemplative future Doomsday who became known to the Man of Steel.

The world of Calaton has rarely been seen or even mentioned in the pages of DC Comics, but it has major connections to Doomsday. During the events of 1994 Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding, the villain posed a major threat to the planet Calaton, pushing his Royal House to take drastic measures in hopes of protecting itself. To this end, they created the Radiant, a being made of pure energy capable of defeating the villain in their first confrontation. Unsurprisingly, Doomsday recovered from this defeat with a new edge over the competition, literally ripping it apart to tear the Radiant to pieces despite his own inherent power.
