In production on the new Netflix limited series, East of Eden, a drama based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck, begins, additional cast members for the series have been announced. By The Hollywood Reporter, Martha Plimpton (The Goonies, raising hope) and Ciarán Hinds (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) were added to the cast, joining the series’ protagonists, Florence Pugh (Oppenheimer, Dune: Part 2) and Mike Faist (Challengers, West Side Story).
Tracy Letts (Ladybug, Little Women), Joseph Zada and Joe Anders were also announced as part of the East of Eden casting. The series recently began production in New Zealand.

The series was acquired by Netflix in 2022 but only received the green light in September. It is written and co-directed by Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 film. East of Eden. Jeb Stuart (Die hard, the fugitive) is co-showrunner.
East of Eden is the story of two families from California’s Salinas Valley: the Trasks and the Hamiltons. According to Netflix, the series will “explore the multi-generational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible anti-hero, Cathy Ames (Pugh).”
Hinds, who recently appeared as the Dark Wizard In The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video, will play Samuel Hamilton, the head of the Hamilton family.
Season 2, Episode 2 of The Rings of Power introduced the character of Hinds, who was anonymous. The actor has previously played roles in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 And Game of Thrones and won a Oscar nomination for her performance in 2021 Belfast.
In The rings of power, Hinds’ character lives in Rhûn, a desert land. There has been speculation that Hinds was portraying a younger version of Saruman from The Lord of the Rings, with his long hair and beard, comparing him to Christopher Lee’s Saruman in the Lord of the Rings movies.

After the Stranger’s identity is confirmed in the final episode of Rings of Power, a Tolkien professor comments on the idea of ”canon”.
However, recently, The Rings of Power the showrunners have debunked this notion. “I’m going to say something officially. Considering the history of Middle-earth, it would be highly, highly unlikely that it was Saruman” said co-showrunner Patrick McKay. “If it’s not impossible,” added co-showrunner JD Payne.
Plimpton is probably best known for her role as Stephanie “Stef” Steinbrenner in the 1985 classic. The Goonies. The iconic film was directed by the late Richard Donner, from a story created by Stephen Spielberg and written by Chris Columbus.. In East of Eden, Plimpton will play the role of Faye, the owner of a brothel in Salinas.
Rumors about a sequel to The Goonies went viral earlier in 2024, but Plimpton said they had no merit. In a post about her Instagram page, Plimpton said of the rumor: “People, there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one attached“, Spielberg does not realize, it’s not real“, she wrote in the post.

The latest rumor came from an article published by The Sun, which indicated that there were plans afoot to create a Goonies sequel with a release date in 2026 or 2027. Actor Ke Huy Quan previously stated that he was open to returning as Data in a sequel. “Unfortunately, we lost Dick Donner, the captain of our ship,” he said. “I really don’t know if there will be a Goonies 2, but I am ready to revisit the character,” he added.
Netflix has not announced a premiere date for East of Eden.
