One of Jujutsu Kaisen’s most popular and popular characters, Gojo Satoru is known for his proud, friendly demeanor and unique personality when dealing with others in the wizarding community. Aside from his more obvious traits, there’s an interesting fact about the super-powered character that’s been hidden in plain sight during the Nest’s past arc in the manga — the fact that the character is a fan of the Digimon franchise.

In Gojo’s backstory arc in Chapter 66 of Jujutsu Kaizen, Gojo and Geto are being prepared by their teacher, Masamichi Yaga, for a mission that will change not only their lives, but wizarding society as a whole. While Yaga and Geto use lofty philosophical concepts to explain to Gojo why the mission needs to be completed, Gojo just shrugs it off as they discuss the Digimon Metal Greymons, Skull Greymons, and Koromons.

Gojo and Geto discuss Digimon and Cursed Spirits in the JJK chapter

While the nest reference places Digimon in Jujutsu Kaizen, it’s not just a casual, one-off mention or gag. It’s a short, but conversational exchange that at least helps Digimon fans quickly understand another obscure situation in the series. Gojo uses Digimon to explain his worries to Master Tengen, as well as the importance of maintaining a balance between the cursed spirit world and the human world. Since Tengen is immortal, as long as his body is relatively young he can help jujutsu wizards protect the cursed spirits. However, if his body becomes too old, he begins to evolve into a cursed spirit. If this happens, other cursed spirits can use it to harm humanity. Therefore, to avoid this, every 500 years he needs to find a young body to “capture”, which resets the clock.

As Gojo explained: It would be acceptable if Master Tengen’s evolution stopped at the level of Metal Greymon. Metal Greymons went from a digitized universal skin digimon to a fully digitized, cyborg version. As a Metal Greymon, Tengen is a strong ally because he still retains a lot of his rationality. However, if Tengen were to fully evolve, like Skull Greymon, or Digimon who had logically lost their intelligence, he would digitize it. As a Skull Greymon, Tengen becomes a danger to anyone he meets. As a result, Tengen needs to “de-gijivolt” into Koromon. Koromons are harmless digimon that can blow bubbles at opponents, but can digitize into many solid forms.

Not only is it an explanation that even a five-year-old can understand, it also shows that Gojo is a real Digimon, otherwise his references can be confusing and misleading. It also makes sense that Cottage is a fan of the franchise. First, like the DigiDestined, wizards are endowed with powers and weapons that they use to fight evil beings from another dimension. Second, only someone with the same level of interest, passion, and intensity that Digimon fans have for the franchise can reach the top of the Jujutsu Kaizen Universe, which is regularly mocked and ignored.
