Armin crying at the end

Summary

Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters Episode 2 fixes Armin’s final speech with Eren, which made the ending of the manga even more controversial. Armin’s rejection of Ruming is prominent in the anime, emphasizing that no one will accept Eren’s plan and its consequences. Changes to Armin’s dialogue in the anime also affect Eren’s dialogue, as he admits that his actions are not the best solution, which further undermines the idea of him being a hero.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters, Part 2.The Attack on Titan anime is finally here, and it fixes one of the biggest problems at the end of the manga. One of the biggest problems with chapter #139’s many points of contention is that Armin seems fine with Eren’s actions in order to praise him for being a mass murderer, and the story seems to be trying too hard to paint Eren as such. Hero.

Armin’s apparent approval of Eren’s actions was a major problem in Attack on Titan’s ending, but Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters Part 2 managed to fix that. Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama has revealed that he worked with the crew to make the finale a little different from the manga, and how that was mostly handled by Armin’s treatment of Eren.

Armin crying at the end

Isayama has previously commented on Armin’s dialogue and regretted not being able to properly convey Armin’s true feelings, so that made sense for the “anime” adaptation, and it resulted in a better end result than the original manga.

Attack on Titan at the end makes it clear that Armin won’t accept the shout

Consequences of noise

The biggest way Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters Episode 2 fixes Armin’s conversation with Eren is simple: he doesn’t acknowledge the scream. Not only is Raming angry that Armin wiped out 80% of humanity, but Armin calls out Eren that his plan won’t save anyone on Paradise Island, but to give people more reasons to fight. That train of thought is preserved at the end of the episode when everyone says that his plan to make Eren a hero is just to smear them on their backs, and it’s even more obvious that no one rejects Eren than in the manga.

The ending of the Attack on Titan anime makes it easy to understand the theme

Eren and Armin's farewell

The biggest advantage of how Attack on Titan’s anime adapts Armin’s conversation with Eren is that the final themes are much easier to understand. With neither Armin nor anyone else doing anything that comes with Eren’s approval, Titan’s central concept that violence is not the solution to the world’s major problems is easily conveyed because the characters don’t say anything, directly contradicting the idea. That attack doesn’t fix all of Titan’s problems with delivering that message, but it’s a significant change that adds a lot to the bottom line.

That idea is taken even further by thinking about how the changes in Armin’s dialogue resulted in changes to Eren’s dialogue. After Eren confirms that his actions are inevitable due to his vision of the future, Armin calls him out on how terrible his plan is. Unlike the manga, Eren admits that he just settled on rambling because he couldn’t come up with anything better. If Eren himself admits that his actions weren’t the best solution, that’s a strong denial that Eren’s actions should ever be seen as justified. All of this serves to significantly correct the problem with Armin’s speech in the ending of the Attack on Titan manga, making the anime version far superior to the original ending.
