Warning: The following contains spoilers for Spy x Family Chapter 89!

The history of the Spy X family has grown to include a large cast, some considered less popular than others. Especially Yuri Briar’s love for his older sister Yor is not warmly welcomed either in or out of the story. Chapter 89 may be a sign that Tatsuya Endo will add more depth to Lloyd Forger’s “rival”.

Some of the skepticism about Yuri’s character is that his existence is entirely tied up in a cliche joke. So far, Yuri’s core identity has been his sis-con traits – his obsession with Yor taken to an extreme. After using the same humor thus far, Yuri finally gets his first wake-up call in Chapter 89, with a new character thrown into the mix.

Yuri finally found depth for a new character

Spy x Family Chapter 89 by Tatsuya Endo

Mission 89 follows the story arc from chapters 80 to 86, which includes the first serious confrontation between Lloyd and Yuri. The arc ends in Lloyd’s favor, now that Yuri is holding a grudge for not being able to capture the hidden super spy Twilight. This frustration leads him to recklessly invade a building full of anti-Establishment criminals, forcing a last-minute rescue by Chloe, a new Austanian SSS agent. This chapter finally sees Endo use Chloe as a mouthpiece to question Yuri’s obsession with his sister, making it clear that it has real consequences in the story.

This may be the first time that the story takes Yuri’s obsession beyond humor and gives him pause to consider it. Before Chloe, all the characters were content to let this cliché play out, perhaps to the viewer’s chagrin. Even Yuri’s superiors were reluctant to act as his direct men. Now, though, Yuri realizes that his sister wishes for his safety, which could be a sign that Endo might dial back on his current personality and do more than hit Yor or panic when she panics.

Spy x Family Yuri and Secret Police

Chloe could be a useful ally for Yuri in the future – she’s an active character willing to verbally care for the latter, which provides many of Yuri’s scenes outside of the Forgers, or rather, his SS superiors mostly standing by and observing oddities rather than engaging with them. She expands on her backstory, detailing her university days. Between this chapter and Fiona Frost’s arc, which gave her some amazing moments, the Spy X family may finally be figuring out how to locate its secondary characters outside of the original pigeonholes.
