Producer explains how Mr. McMahon’s documentary changed after sex trafficking trial

The recently released Netflix documentary series Mr. McMahon chronicles the life and career of its titular subject. However, producer Matt Maxson claims the content changed drastically after Janel Grant filed a lawsuit against the former WWE chairman.

Grant filed a sexual abuse and misconduct lawsuit against McMahon in January 2024, after making these claims anonymously in 2022. Kevin Iole YouTube ChannelMaxson explained how the lawsuit changed the documentary. “I received a call in June or July 2021. I came across a project that had been going on since 2018. It already had two acts then.” he said. “Filming didn’t really start until 2021. I was inculcated quite early. We were taking something that, at the time, really had no end. »

It wasn’t necessarily the most fascinating story“, Maxon continued. “He was a guy who built this empire and at that point he looked like he was on cruise control. We had all these different endings. We were shopping and wondering, “Is AEW going to be a challenge for him?” “Is this going to happen?” We had gotten pretty far into production, throughout 2021 and early 2022, and I remember we were looking at cuts. We had a first draft for the first five or six episodes. As we look at it, we give ourselves notes on certain things… That’s when the first Wall Street Journal article came out.“.

The entire documentary has been reworked

From there, we had to step back and rethink everything from the ground up.“, explained Maxson. “I have never been involved in a project that lasted so long and required so many acts. I think [producer] Bill Simmons said he remembers 14 cuts. I remember much more than that. It just felt like going from something that seemed static and stale and time-locked to a moment where you’re nervously refreshing Twitter going, “Is something else going to come out that we’re not aware of?” fluent ? » McMahon then canceled his remaining interviews for the project.

Following Mr. McMahon’s Netflix debut, the former WWE boss released a statement calling the project misleading. “”The producers had the opportunity to tell an objective story about my life and the incredible business I’ve built, which was also filled with excitement, drama, fun and a good amount of controversy and lessons of life.“, he said. “Unfortunately, based on an early partial cut that I saw, this document fails and takes the predictable route of confusing the ‘Mr. McMahon’s character with my real self, Vince“.

Many things were distorted or left out entirely in an attempt to leave viewers intentionally confused.“, McMahon continued. “The producers use typical editing tricks with out-of-context sequences and dated sound clips and the like. to distort viewers’ perceptions and support a misleading narrative. In an attempt to support their misleading story, the producers use a lawsuit based on an affair I ended as proof that I am, in fact, “Mr.” McMahon.'”

The six payments of Mr. McMahon are broadcast on Netflix.
