Robert Eggers wanted Count Orlok to be grotesque
The gothic horror based on the 1922 German horror masterpiece stars Bill Skarsgård, the brother of Alexander Skarsgård, with whom Eggers worked on The Northerner. The director wanted to give the vampire a different approach, bringing him back to the undead being he always was. Although he admitted that he thinks “Bill’s vampire is sexy,” he also previously explained the difference from other vampires. “Orlok drinks blood from the heart, not the neck.”
“We went to Edward Cullen, where vampires aren’t scary“, Eggers noted. “So how can we go in the completely opposite direction of that? Vthe amps were frightening enough that people dug up the corpses, cut them into pieces, and set them on fire.” He emphasized: “I think we deserve a scary, stinking corpse again“.
Nosferatu is currently showing in cinemas.
