Morena Baccarin caused a stir at the recent FAN EXPO Canada after she said she wanted to be a villain in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The actress has been vying for a role in a DC movie since the heyday of the DCEU; she could have been cast in any blockbuster film, but especially in Batman vs Superman, Birds of preyor even The Suicide Squad. Baccarin has now confirmed that she wants to play Catwoman (according to user X Agents of Fandom), recently played by Zoë Kravitz in The Batman. One fan even posted a picture of what she might look like in character on Instagram (she’s also sporting a pixie cut).
Baccarin hinted at his interest in the role in a 2018 interview with Cinepop; she was then doing press tours for Deadpool 2 and revealed that her biggest dream is to play the female version of James Bond. When asked if she would consider a DC or Marvel superhero, she replied: “I identify more with the villains, Poison Ivy and Catwoman.” However, the closest she has come to embodying these characters is a co-starring role in television series GothamShe played the role of Leslie Thompkins, a GCPD medical examiner, Barbara Gordon’s mother, and James Gordon’s wife. This series depicted the origins of the villains, using Maggie Geha (Ted 2) and Carmen Bicondova (Festival of the Undead) as young Ivy Peper and Selina Kyle.
“It’s all about feminine strength”
Baccarin reflected on his experience in Gothamsaying she would love to play the role again anytime. “I loved doing Gotham when I had the chance, but yes, I would love to,” she said (via Comic stripFilm). “I think for me it’s all about this strong female role.” She also wants to complete her MCU character’s story arc: she’s appeared in every dead Pool Vanessa Carlysle, also known in the comics as Copycat, a shapeshifting mutant. The character fell out with Wade Wilson after his cancer diagnosis in the comics; she became a mercenary and infiltrated X-Force at one point (by copying Domino) in an attempt to kill Cable.
Deadpool 2 Writer Rhett Reese previously revealed plans to expand Vanessa’s story in the sequel, but not give her comic-book mutant powers. “Originally, we didn’t save her. [after Deadpool]”, he told CBR. “It was interesting. We thought we had to save her with the time machine because the audience would be mad at us, but they accepted her death.” Deadpool 2 explored the multiverse angle when Wade Wilson tampered with Cable’s (Josh Brolin) time travel device during the end credits. Deadpool goes back in time to prevent Vanessa’s death and other “anomalies” in the Marvel (and DC) timelines.
