Vaiana 2 announces its highly anticipated release with new promotional images featuring the eponymous character and her friends as they bask in a new adventure. The upcoming animated sequel offers a different take on Moana during its D23 presentation.
Via ColliderDisney introduced some of the main characters of Vaiana 2 at D23, including Moana, Maui, Heihei and Pua the pig. The quartet appears on a catamaran at night, with Moana looks slightly older and taller than in the original film, while Maui, Heihei and Pua are locked away and enjoying the trip. Another image features Maui’s favorite weapon, a magic hookfront and center.

Vaiana 2 recently stepped up its promotion at CinemaCon and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, showcasing new footage and revealing new plot details at the latter event. The Annecy previews followed a record-breaking first trailer for Vaiana 2setting new audience records for Disney as the sequel nears its theatrical debut this fall.

Auli’i Cravalho returns to play the titular daughter of a village chief. Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the shapeshifting demigod Maui, and Alan Tudyk plays Heihei, Moana’s pet rooster. It has not yet been confirmed who will voice Pua in the sequel.

Vaiana 2 The film follows the critically acclaimed 2016 original film, which received two Academy Award nominations and grossed $687.2 million at the global box office. The sequel sees Moana embark on a new adventure after being contacted by her ancestors who have guided her. Moana travels through dangerous waters to Oceania, encountering various intimidating underworld gods and other difficult creatures as she attempts to reconnect all the peoples and communities of Oceania. Moana must summon Maui and a group of new sailors to help her succeed in her mission. While many familiar characters from the first film appear, not all of them are present in the film. Vaiana will return amid major behind-the-scenes changes.
The development of Vaiana 2 coincides with a planned live action Vaiana film starring Johnson, who will play a real-life version of Maui. Cravalho will not be playing the live-action version of Moana, with teen actress Catherine Laga’aia reprising the eponymous lead role. Johnson recently confirmed that the live-action film will be produced Vaiana The film will begin filming this month, but no other cast members have been revealed yet. The film will be released on July 10, 2026, after a theatrical release originally scheduled for 2025.
Vaiana 2 hits theaters on November 27. In the meantime, fans can stream the original version Vaiana via Disney+.
