Transformers and Bad Boys director Michael Bay makes the jump to the small screen with this exciting comic book adaptation.

Filmmaker Michael Bay, known for his explosive big-budget films, is set to direct an adaptation of Vault Comics’ Barbarian for Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Bay will team up with A+E Studios to produce the series, which includes Sam Claffin (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Daisy Jones & The Six) and Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek: Picard).

A brutal plot

Barbaric is one of Vault Comics’ most popular series, known for its creator-owned science fiction, fantasy, and horror comics. The story follows Owen the Barbarian, a warrior cursed to do good for the rest of his life. Armed with a bloodthirsty ax that serves as his moral compass, Owen wanders the kingdom helping everyone in need despite his distaste for laws and hatred of wizards. The official description of the comic presents it as a violent and humorous journey of how a person meant to do good can end up causing a lot of harm.

The series will be written and produced by Sheldon Turner (On Air, X-Men: First Class), along with 100% studio partner Jennifer Klein, and Vault Comics heads FJ DeSanto and Damian Wassel. Sam Claflin will executive produce through his company Cusp Films, along with Luke Carroll and Michael Stevenson, and A+E Studios’ Barry Johnson and Tana Jamieson.

Sam Claflin plays Owen the Barbarian, while Patrick Stewart voices the demonic axe, adding a touch of class and experience to the series. This project marks an exciting return to an action role for Clafin, and Swart’s presence ensures a high level of acting quality.

This isn’t Michael Bay’s only foray into the series world. The director is working on a drama series for Amazon Prime Video. The untitled project follows an American bounty hunter working south of the border who finds himself in a fight for survival when the man he pursues gets them both into trouble with a Mexican cartel. The series was created and written by television writer Joe Barton.

A story from afar

Bay commented on the origins of the series: “I was inspired by living in Costa Rica 5 years ago with a former US federal agent who surfed every day and made a good living. He finances his relaxed lifestyle in Costa Rica by tracking down ‘bad gringos’ hiding in South America.

Joe Barton added, “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Michael Bay and Amazon to bring this exciting and action-packed series to the screen.
