The great Star Wars parody, Spaceballs, will be the sequel under Amazon’s MGM Studios production and with Josh Gad as screenwriter, producer and lead actor.

Mel Brooks, the creator of Spaceball fame, has been hinting at the possibility of a sequel for years. Now that Amazon’s MGM Studios has given the green light for production, this project seems like a tangible reality. Josh Gad hinted at this development not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter and producer. Gadd, along with Benji Summitt and Dan Hernandez, best known for their work on Pikachu, wrote the script, which Gadd described as “the funniest and best thing I’ve ever done.”

As for direction, Josh Greenbaum, who gave us the unique Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar, takes the helm of the project. Kevin Salter joins as executive producer, strengthening the team that promises creativity and humor in this series.

Although concrete plot details have yet to be revealed, fans are already speculating and hoping to see Rick Moranis reprise his iconic role as Dark Helmet. It will undoubtedly be a vital part of connecting this new unit with the spirit of the original. Excitement is in the air, but we still have to wait to see how these plans pan out.

The story of the original film

In the year Remember that the original Spaceballs, a Star Wars parody from 1987, brought us the adventures of Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy). Together they try to save Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Scrubs (Brooks).

Guided by the wise Yogurt, they discover the mysterious power of “Schwartz” who helps them in their mission. Not only did this film deliver laughs, it became a cult classic for its unique humor and unique perspective on the Star Wars universe.

Fans, including myself, will want the sequel to laugh just as much as the original, and of course Rick Moranis donning the Dark Helmet again. What more could you want from Spaceballs 2?
