Marvel’s original hybrid symbiote made its comic book debut in 1995. Venom: A Spider Has Arrived #1 in the issue’s backup story, “First Touch,” by Evan Skolnick and Patrick Zircher. A combination of the Life Foundation symbiotes Riot, Phage, Lasher, and Agony, these four were subjected to a series of horrific experiments that resulted in their transformation into a composite form. Initially, the hybrid symbiote bonded with guard Scott Washington. However, their time was short before the symbiotes were separated and Washington was killed by Eddie Brock.

Since then, the Life Foundation symbiotes that once made up Hybrid have worked together on numerous storylines such as Carnage in the United States They’ve even reunited as hybrids on numerous occasions with hosts ranging from Deadpool to the villainous Reed Richards known as The Maker. Most recently, the hybrid symbiote was corrupted by Knull during the events of King in blackleading to an explosive confrontation between him and Andi Benton, the current host of the Silence symbiote and former host of Scream.

This new hybrid symbiote consists of Dylan Brock, who is himself a human-symbiote hybrid, as well as the symbiotes Sleeper and Flexo. While Sleeper is one of Venom’s many descendants, Flexo has a very different origin. First appearing in Will Harr and Jack Binder’s story “Introducing, Flexo the Rubber Man,” in the pages of the 1940s Mystical Comics #1, the eponymous entity was once thought to be a simple, flexible, rubbery robot with a heart of gold. In recent years, Flexo’s origins have been rewritten, with an unnamed symbiote hiding at the heart of the so-called Rubber Man’s “technological” secrets.
