THE The Lord of the Rings The franchise is full of characters who all have their own motivations and stories. Many characters trigger events while they work in the background. The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim The film doesn’t deviate from this trend. While it’s reasonable to assume that the events of the film will focus primarily on the war itself, the trailers have hinted at larger moments that could be addressed. This is only highlighted by the appearance of Saruman in the Japanese version of the trailer.
Although it took place two centuries before The Lord of the Rings movies, The Rohirrim War has many characters from the original series that he can use. After all, many characters in the franchise are immortal or at least have long lives. This includes Sauron, who has been around since the First Age of Middle-earth. In the stories given by JRR Tolkien, Sauron has no direct involvement in the war and has no body at this time.. However, he has invested in many locations surrounding Rohan. Additionally, his search for the One Ring is still ongoing at this point.
What is Rohan’s place in the Lord of the Rings universe?
Sauron has never been depicted with any interest in Rohan. During the period between the founding of the country and the war, he is also not noted as doing anything of note. Instead, Sauron reigns evil in the world. Rohan is bordered by the Misty Mountains, and Sauron helped make them more dangerous. The orcs not only settled there, they also actively fought other forces. They eventually fought the people of the Shire during the reign of Helm Hammerhand.
Additionally, Rohan has been an ally of Gondor since the kingdom’s founding. Sauron has a long history of animosity towards Gondor, leading the Nazgul to attack the people of Gondor. Suaron later influenced the Easterlings to invade the land. In general, Sauron seems opposed to taking over Gondor’s forces. This also puts him at odds with Rohan. While Sauron has no interest in war, he may favor the Dunlendings. He even recruits the Dunlendings during the War of the Ring.
Saruman Takes Isengard
Early in the war, the Dunlendings occupied Isengard, among other places. After following Wulf into battle, the Dunlendings eventually lost much of their power. Eventually, it was Saruman who settled in Isengard. He eventually made it his own fortress. Sauron tapped into the palantiri of Isengard to communicate with Saruman. Much of the army in the War of the Ring came from Saruman’s siege of Isengard. Sauron might not have been able to use Saruman so much if the Rohirrim War had not ended as it did.
One Ring to Rule Them All
- Sauron is one of the Maiar like Gandalf and the Balrog.
- The Rings of Power and the One Ring were forged in the Second Age.
- Sauron lost the One Ring and his physical form at the end of the Second Age.
What matters most to Sauron is the One Ring. At this point in the timeline, he has distributed the Rings of Power to humans, the Dwarven rings have been destroyed, and the Elven rings have been confined. However, Sauron lost the One Ring centuries ago. At the time of the war, it is Gollum who has it. He is in the Misty Mountains, but this is not common knowledge. Sauron is still searching for the ring by any means possible.
When the orc at the end of the trailer talks about the rings and Mordor, he’s probably working for Sauron. There’s reason to believe that Sauron has sent his forces to find the One Ring. However, those seeking it likely don’t know what they’re looking for, other than a ring. Sauron has no reason to tell them. It would reveal too much weakness and also encourage others to try to find the One Ring themselves. Sauron wants to retrieve the ring as quickly and quietly as possible.
There are many indicators in promotional materials for The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim and the history of Middle-earth pointing towards Sauron’s presence in the upcoming film. However, the extent of his role is still unclear at this point. While the events of the war will ultimately be a blessing for Sauron, he doesn’t know it yet. Instead, his quest for the One Ring is his main priority, and that’s the only reason he would be in the film.
