Boardwalk Empire star Kelly MacDonald may play Carol Ferris in the LANTERNS series
The upcoming DC Studios and HBO series “Lanterns” is said to be considering Kelly MacDonald, known for her role in “Boardwalk Empire,” to play Hal Jordan’s love interest. But are we faced with a new version of Carol Ferris?
A talented Lanterns Corp
DC Studios is assembling an impressive cast for “Lanterns,” with Kyle Chandler already confirmed in the role of Hal Jordan and Stephan James the possible favorite to play John Stewart. Recently, we heard from @MyTimeToShineH that Kelly MacDonald (“Brave,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “The Radleys”) received an offer for one of the two lead female roles in the HBO series.
Nexus Point News confirmed this information, adding that “She is set to play the town sheriff and love interest of Hal Jordan. It is unclear whether the character is original or whether it is Carol Ferris.
A role like a glove
If she turns out to be Carol, it would mean a radical reinvention of the character, as in the comics her family owns the Ferris Aircraft company, where she is an executive and occasional pilot. Carol later transforms into Star Sapphire, fighting for love throughout the universe as part of the Star Sapphire Corps.
However, everything indicates that MacDonald will not play Carol. The fact that Hal has an affair with the town sheriff in this mystery suggests that he and his usual love interest are no longer together. Additionally, the fact that Hal is in his 50s or 60s could indicate that Carol is already dead or that her superhero days are behind her.
MacDonald would be an exciting addition to the DC Universe and it feels like we’re looking at a very human story despite the cosmic background of the Green Lantern Corps.
How does the new narrative fit into the Lantern legacy?
In this reinterpretation, DC Studios seems to explore deeper and more personal dimensions Hal Jordanmoving away from classic intergalactic adventures to focus on a more grounded and human mystery. This decision may reflect a change in the way superhero series are perceived by audiences, looking for stories that resonate with more earthly themes and characters that are easy to identify with, without losing the connection to DC’s cosmic universe.
Furthermore, by setting the plot in an environment such as the American heartland, “Lanterns” risks comparison with others mystery dramas hits, like “True Detective,” which also mixed the supernatural with the everyday. This fusion of genres could attract a wider audience, eager to see how Hal Jordan face challenges that are both personal and heroic. The series promises to be a key piece in the new fabric of DCUoffering a fresh and exciting take on what it means to be a hero in modern times.
“Lanterns” is shaping up to be one of DC Studios’ most intriguing projects, and given that it’s been widely reported that Chandler’s Hal will be a one-time character in this series, his place in the larger DCU promises to be worthy of Note. Attention.
A plot straight from the comics
The series follows new recruit John Stewart and legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops caught up in a dark, earthly mystery as they investigate a murder in America’s heartland.
Chris Mundy (“True Detective: Night Country”) is the showrunner and executive producer and will write “Lanterns” alongside Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and comic book writer Tom King (“Supergirl”).
A wait with no release date
When the creative team for “Lanterns” was first revealed, James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-presidents and co-CEOs of DC Studios, shared a joint statement that read: “We are thrilled to bring this seminal DC title on HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom in command.
“John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and ‘Lanterns’ brings them to life in an original crime novel that is a key part of the unified DCU we launch next summer with ‘Superman.’”
“Lanterns” does not yet have a confirmed release date.
