Jurassic Park The film is based on the original novel by Michael Crichton, who co-wrote the film adaptation. While it is directly inspired by the novel, the film also features some key changes, including one suggested at the last minute by franchise star Jeff Goldblum.
By Vanity FairGoldblum reviewed Jurassic Park He praised director Steven Spielberg’s generosity, which led to the story of how Goldblum came up with the idea to make his character more heroic. The scene in particular is when the lawyer (Martin Ferrero) tries to hide from the T-Rex by hiding in a bathroom, only to be devoured by the dinosaur shortly after. In the script, Dr. Ian Malcolm, played by Goldblum, was to immediately flee the area out of fear.
However, Goldblum didn’t feel like it was the right decision for his Jurassic Park The actor thought Malcolm wouldn’t run away so quickly, so he suggested to Spielberg that the character should be a little braver than what was written in the script for this scene. Given that many big-name directors prefer to stick to the script, there was certainly no guarantee that Goldblum’s request would be granted. As the actor explained, however, Spielberg agreed to the change, adding it to the film just in time for shooting.
Jeff Goldblum Wanted Dr. Ian Malcolm to Have More “Grit”
“You know, if I remember correctly, Mr. Spielberg and I were talking, and he was so generous“, Goldblum said. “We had this idea that, instead of in the book, when we started talking, the lawyer, as you remember, says, ‘Ah, I shouldn’t be here because the dinosaurs or the T-Rex are out.’ And he goes to the bathroom and [the dinosaur] he eats it in the toilet. And then my character, he says, “I’m leaving here too.” And then he comes after me, and it turns out he gives… Alan Grant the opportunity to save the children.
Goldblum added: “I think it came up in a discussion, where we said, ‘Hey, what if, instead of being repetitive with the lawyer, you know, not that these guys aren’t scary, dinosaurs aren’t scary, but maybe my character is a little bit, he has some courage and sacrificial heroism in himand goes, takes this rocket, lights it and purposely distracts the dinosaur. We all thought it was a good idea.. Anyway, if you’re interested in making some sausage, that changed a bit at the last minute.
Maybe my character has a little bit of courage and sacrificial heroism in him.
Giving Malcolm a little more bravado may have helped make the character a fan favorite among moviegoers. Malcolm had become so popular that Goldblum was brought back to play the role in the first sequel, The Lost World. Goldblum would later reprise the role for 2018. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and 2022 Jurassic World Domination.
The next chapter in the franchise, Jurassic World Rebornis scheduled to be released in theaters on July 2, 2025.
