Joker: The World review

David Rubín, Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok are some of the authors who accompany the Joker in El Mundo, a collection of stories in which the villain travels to a multitude of countries in a volume published by ECC Ediciones

For reasons unrelated to the cartoons and more related to current politics than to the ninth art, Joker: The world It became the comic of the moment and brought with it a lot of controversy that would only be understood in a certain context. But above all the one present in this volume published by Editions ETC You can find very interesting elements…

The Joker visits Spain

The proposal of this story is quite interesting: thirteen teams of authors from different countries have the task of telling the Joker’s adventures through their respective lands of origin. And coincidentally, one of the countries chosen is Spain. The fact that a character from the American slumber party comic visits our country in a story is already an attractive element in itself, and it is even more so if it is created by the hand of an author like Davide Rubino.

Salvador Larroca I already took the X-Men reside for a period in Valencia, Larry Hama Done Glutton had difficult times during the Spanish Civil War and Diego Olmos showed the wonders of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona during the visit of Batman to the city of Barcelona, shortly before Dark Knight we went on holiday to Benidorm hand in hand Paco Roca. But now it’s a bad guy who visits the capital of Spain.

Rubín’s stories always have a strong political component, and on this occasion he uses the commission of DC Comics criticize harshly (and with a hint of sarcasm) the policies of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid. The intention, obviously, is to revolutionize a certain sector, and it seems to have succeeded.

The reasoning that emerges from these pages is clear in which the Galician author describes the capital as an authentic social hell that only someone like Joker could appreciate as a paradise (the protagonist leads him to describe the city as a Gotham City without Batman). His message comes across clearly and emphatically. But it’s also a fantastic story, which isn’t surprising given the quality that Rubín has accustomed us to.

World travel, variety of styles

Among the other twelve stories that make up this collection, the first one especially stands out, the one that happened in the United States and carried on by two superstars like Geoff Johns Yes Jason Fabok. In a handful of pages, this pair shows us the most psychopathic version of the Joker in an almost traditional episode in which the character shines as only he can.

Germany, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Czech Republic, Turkey, South Korea, Argentina, Cameroon, Poland and Japan (the episode that closes the volume, narrated from right to left by any good manga) are the rest of the countries. with what has been said. Even if we will not find authors whose works we can know (it is surprising that in some places they have not looked for more famous cartoonists or screenwriters like in Spain), the continuous change of style is very pleasant.

This volume offers the opportunity to meet artists as different as night and day, which adds a lot of richness to the whole. Even so, perhaps, we miss the inclusion of a country with which we could enjoy a clear Franco-Belgian version of the Joker.

Editions ETC presents this tome in hardback format. The volume contains 184 color pages and includes the translation of the American edition of Joker: The world. The recommended retail price is €25 and went on sale in September 2024.
