The new Netflix anime based on the Terminator universe promises to give us a cool fantasy under the amazing animation.

Netflix has revealed the first images of its anime series Terminator Zero, a proposal that promises to revive the universe created by James Cameron with a unique atmosphere, although the famous Connors will not appear in this narrative.

The series, from showrunner and executive producer Mattson Tomlin – known for his work on Project Power and The Batman II – is shaping up to be an interesting cross between horror and science fiction, following Cameron’s first film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tomlin said that Terminator Zero could be compared to the horror franchises of the eighties, where characters like Jason and Freddy dominated the screen. “Think of The Terminator as an echo of Friday the 13th and Michael Myers as a brutal serial killer,” Tomlin said.

2022 versus 1997: Infinity War and Time Travel

Terminator Zero’s origin is based on two interrelated timelines: In 2022, a decades-long futuristic war pits the few human survivors against an endless army of machines, and in 1997, a critical period for AI. Known as Skynet, he becomes self-aware and starts a war against humanity.

In the middle of this temporary war is a soldier sent in time to change the fate of man. Their mission is to protect scientist Malcolm Lee, who is on the verge of developing a new AI system that can rival Skynet and prevent a potential attack. As Malcolm grapples with the moral complexities of his creation, he becomes the target of a relentless assassin from the future, whose presence irrevocably changes the fates of his three children.

The animation will be done by the famous Japanese production studio IG, whose work is on Ghost in the Shell. The first season will consist of eight episodes and is scheduled to air on Netflix on August 29, 2024.

This bold reinterpretation of the Terminator universe invites new viewers and diehards alike to immerse themselves in a story that blends horror with science fiction, promising to be one of Netflix’s most exciting bets for 2024.

The story of the whole saga

Throughout the story, Saga explores different angles of a dystopian future where humanity faces its own creation: machines. In the year In the original 1984 film The Terminator, we witness how the cybernetic assassin T-800 is sent from 2029 to kill Sarah Connor, the future leader of the human resistance. This charge sets the tone for the relentless struggle for survival.

Terminator

Terminator 2: Judgment Day, released in 1991, introduced us to a more advanced version of the Terminator, the T-1000, sent to destroy a young John Connor. However, a reprogrammed T-800 is sent to protect him, signaling a narrative where the enemy is defensive. This sequel delves into themes of redemption and human nature.

The third film, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, picks up the story of John Connor living in anonymity after Doomsday is postponed. Here, the new model, TX, is introduced as a more advanced and deadly machine with the mission of destroying future resistance leaders. The film ends with the inevitable start of the war against the machines, which sets a tone of tragic inevitability.

In Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys, the saga explores the sequel and alternate events of Doomsday, the war between humans and machines, and attempts to change the past to change the future.

Each film adds more layers to the rich narrative of the Terminator universe, exploring the ethics of artificial intelligence, human sacrifice, and the struggle for freedom. With the arrival of anime, Netflix promises to further explore these themes by introducing new characters and difficult situations in a context that remains relevant in our technological age.
