Moztros takes us back to the darkest ice cream shop with volume nine of Ice Cream Man
Moztrosthe young publisher born three years ago is establishing itself in the world of Spanish comics. Although it has similar series Power Rangers which we could define as more mainstream, has also decided to take an unusual path, the independent one, publishing comic anthologies, such as Bad idea. The publisher began publishing the horror anthology series Ice cream maker: The ice cream maker.
Originally published by Image comicthe horror anthology series created by W. Prince Maxwell Yes Martin Morazzo They came out in 2018. This duo decided to get together to make short stories, but of a specific genre, horror and dark. Although the idea was to tell independent stories, they all have a common link, the ice cream man. And there’s nothing like combining a childish, innocent figure with a dark one to generate something truly terrifying. The series has been highly appreciated by critics and is currently in its 9th volume, which has finally arrived Spain and that we will talk about it in this review.
The ice cream man attacks again
This volume nine presents us with a series of the most varied stories. In the first we are shown how the writer wants to create a cheerful and funny story, but what emerges is a dark story about a boy with a rather gray and depressing life. Another story tells us about the life of two beggars who tell each other a scary story, one of which comes true. In another, a man writes the most important book you’ll ever read, a book about monsters. In the last one we have a sailor obsessed with the whale who swallowed his daughter whole.
All these stories have a common thread, the shadowy figure of the ice cream man, always lurking with his impeccable white clothes and a smile that doesn’t exactly convey happiness. All the stories mix everything from psychological to paranormal horror.
W. Maxwell Principe Yes Martin Morazzo They prove once again that they are still in excellent shape. Although there are small connections between the different stories, each of them is unique. If at the beginning of this volume it was announced that each story is written by a different writer, it would be very believable, because each issue is totally different. He only has two things in common, terror and the ice cream man, always lurking. Prince raises the bar once again with his originality and his way of telling stories, maintaining the level of his previous chapters. If you like horror and darkness, you will find a great variety of expressions of this genre in these volumes.
The art of Morazzo maintains the level of previous volumes. A fine and elegant line that gives a lot of expressiveness to the faces of the different characters who convey a wide variety of emotions and feelings, most of which are obviously negative. Although it is very likely that this drawing will not please everyone, the Argentine artist provides a drawing full of originality that gives a unique personality to the series. We also have to give credit to the colorist. Chris O’Happelloranas it generates a huge contrast with the bright colors it uses, with the dark stories that are told.
The Ice Cream Man Vol 9 edition by Moztros
Like previous issues, Moztros brings us this volume 9 with a hardback format with a size of 17×26 cm. A total of 128 pages of decent quality. The volume is also accompanied by a gallery of covers and characters. The comic is on sale for €20.90.
Prince, Morazzo, and O’Happelloran are still in top form with their anthology series, creating varied stories full of dark and brooding horror. Unique stories that amaze with their originality and which seem to have been created by different artists precisely because of their diversity. Morazzo and O’Happelloran once again generate the perfect contrast between a happy design, but which generates discomfort because you can see that something strange is happening. Even though we are at volume nine, the ice cream maker hasn’t run out of freshness. It remains one of the great surprises of independent comics.
