Eyes of Wakanda producer explains why animated MCU prequel can’t be made in live action
A story that has lasted for years
Since its announcement in December 2023, Eyes of Wakanda has caught the attention of fans. Harris, who hosts this four-episode limited series, recently shared that the concept has been “a long time in the making.” In his words, Wakanda is a unique place, “a land that has drawn a line that it is neither willing to cross nor let others do so”making him a fascinating symbol within the MCU.
The series follows the Hatut Zaraze, Wakandan warriors tasked with recovering Vibranium artifacts stolen from Wakanda’s enemies throughout the story. According to Harris, the project’s grandeur could only be achieved through animation.
“Animation is the great equalizer of positions”he explained. Distant places like Egypt, New York, or even the Moon can be depicted just as easily as Ohio. This approach not only eliminates the budget limitations of international filming, but also allows eras to be reimagined in an idealized way, without the constraints of human history.
The stellar cast that brings Wakanda to life
Eyes of Wakanda It stands out not only for its innovative format, but also for its impressive voice cast. Among its protagonists we find Winnie Harlow (America’s next top model), Cress Williams (Black Lightning), Patricia Belcher (Disney Channel), Lynn Whitfield (Emmy winner), and the legendary Anika Noni Rose, among others.
Additionally, the project features heavyweights like Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed director of Black Panther and its sequel, which he executive produces alongside iconic names such as Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Zinzi Coogler.
And what about Black Panther 3?
The future of franchising Black Panther remains uncertain following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020. Marvel Studios decided not to recast the role of T’Challa, leaving a void for its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), he addressed himself by handing over the baton to Shuri, played by Letitia Wright.
Despite the critical and commercial success of both films, Marvel has yet to officially confirm a third installment. However, recent rumors suggest that there may be some moves on the horizon. In December, Denzel Washington hinted at his participation in the next film, while well-known insider Jeff Sneider reported that Marvel would be looking for a new actor to play T’Challa in future projects, including the highly anticipated Avengers.
The series that expands Wakanda’s legacy beyond cinema
Eyes of Wakanda not only expands the MCU universe, but also delves into the cultural impact of Wakanda as an indestructible nation full of symbolism. Through animation, the creators manage to explore the historical and geopolitical conflicts who have defined its essence, connecting the public with the roots and values of this fascinating world.
One of the strengths of the series is the inclusion of the Zaraze hatsan elite group tasked with protecting Wakanda from external threats. In the films of Black Panthertheir presence was more discreet, but now these warriors receive the prominence they deserve, showing their courage and dedication in impossible missions. This anthology promises to be a unique window to the challenges of the Wakandan protectors, bringing a whole new dimension to the Marvel Universe.
Marvel’s next appointment
With its premiere scheduled for August 6, 2025, Eyes of Wakanda joins the Marvel lineup on Disney+, which also includes series like Marvel Zombies. This prequel promises to further expand the universe of Wakanda, exploring not only its cultural legacy, but also the challenges it has faced over the centuries.
