Final Integrated Review. Ultimate Spiderman 10 – The Clone Saga

The controversial and controversial clone saga is reinvented by Brian Michael Bendis in the tenth comprehensive Ultima Spider-Man collection published by Panini Comics.

If we talk about the length and quality levels of Spiderman as a main character, few can compete with the work done by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley mainly in the Ultimate Universe. It was not only about rebooting the character, but also daring to retell the same stories, but almost always improving the original version from a current and different point of view. The latest volume collected by Panini Comics is a good proof of this, brought to us under the title Ultimate Integral. Ultimate Spiderman 10 – The Clone Saga.

The worst event in Spiderman’s life

If we ask the loyal readers of Spiderman, in their opinion, what is the worst story of the character in his continuity, most of the answers will probably point to one more day (also known as Mephistazo, in which the relationship was broken between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson), past Sins of the Sins (where we found out about the affair between Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn) and of course, with the clone saga.

In the original saga published in the mid-nineties, we saw the return of a character we thought was dead for decades: Peter’s clone. He was back under the name of Ben Reilly and brought with him the appearance of other clones, Kane was the most famous. The saga ends with May Parker’s death, Mary Jane’s pregnancy, the killing of most of these clones, and the revelation that the clone is not Ben, but Peter. It may not seem so bad this way, but it was an incredible disaster.

Improved clones

In this reinterpretation, the surprise comes to us from the beginning when, in a fight between the wall-hunter and the scorpion, the latter’s mask is removed to reveal a face identical to Peter’s. After this, new clones join the plot, including a corrupted Kane and a tarantula, the difference being that it has six arms.

And the surprises never stop piling up. We’ll have impactful resurrections, big reveals (some secret identities will be revealed), romantic entanglements, and some basic character changes. You could say that the level of mayhem and madness that Bendis brings us here is similar to the Earth-616 clone saga, but here the author teaches a lesson in how these types of stories should be done.

As for the protagonists of the original saga, here Ben Reilly is a lab assistant and Miles Warren is Harry Osborn’s psychiatrist, hired by him to erase all memories of the Green Goblin. Even so, it will play a fundamental role in the origin of everything that happens here with the great villain known as the first wall seeker.

Bendis a tope

If it wasn’t clear during the clone plot, here Bendis is probably at his narrative peak when it comes to Sleeper Stories, after this conclusion and a little arc where the web-slinger appears. The volume closes with the final versions of heroes like Daredevil, Shang-Chi, Iron Fist or Doctor Strange, with a title that remains one of the best of the series.

And not because of the number itself, he also, but because it represents the culmination of what Bendis has been working on for more than a hundred episodes: a very intelligent construction of characters. And this chapter shows that when a screenwriter works well with the characters, it’s relatively easy to make talking heads shine in something as simple as dialogue.

In short, in this volume, we have one of the best stories for every good superhero comic reader (at least until Miles Morales comes along).
