THE Fantastic Beasts movies were supposed to continue the Harry Potter series and expand the wizarding world at a time when Star Wars and other franchises were also finding new ways to reinvent themselves. While the idea for the first film came from a fiction textbook, JK Rowling envisioned a massive saga spanning five films. One reason for this was the inclusion of Gellert Grindelwald, the franchise’s next major villain after Voldemort. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them veteran brought back Harry Potter director David Yates and attracted a talented cast led by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. THE Harry Potter The prequel had all the makings of a major success and the first film was exactly that, with a box office exceeding $800 million worldwide and favorable reviews.

THE Fantastic Beasts The series is off to a good start and has maintained the consistent quality expected of the Harry Potter franchise. Unfortunately, the Fantastic Beasts the films would take a turn for the worse with the box office returns of the next two sequels becoming smaller. The Crimes of Grindelwald also suffered from bad reviews which only slightly improved with Dumbledore’s Secrets. The Wizarding World had the potential to expand and tell stories unrelated to Harry Potter, but that will no longer be the case. Warner Bros. moving forward with a restart Harry Potter series for HBO which will tell the story based on the seven books, leaving the Fantastic Beasts dead and incomplete story. Farrell versus Depp versus Mikkelsen: who was better Grindelwald?

The Fantastic Beasts films showed three iterations of Gellert Grindelwald. But between Farrell, Depp and Mikkelsen, who was the best Grindelwald?

The twist is reminiscent of those that occur in Harry Potter entries, but for Fantastic Beaststhat would be a mistake. Farrell was a satisfying villain for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Again he was also a strong enough actor to play Gellert Grindelwald in his proper form. The Penguin The series continued to show how talented Farrell is as a performer, and the Fantastic Beasts the films would have benefited from him being the main villain. Although it makes sense, story-wise, as to why Farell wouldn’t appear again in the future. Fantastic Beasts installments, his inclusion always seemed like a waste since he was already playing Grindelwald in a weird way that could only happen in the wizarding world.

Johnny Depp took over the role of Grindelwald

Farrell would only appear in one Fantastic Beasts film because Johnny Depp would play Grindelwald in his true form at the end of the first film and in The Crimes of Grindelwald. Depp turned in a solid performance as Grindelwald in the second Fantastic Beasts movie, but his reputation outside of the film would harm the franchise. Depp found himself in a whirlwind of controversy due to a defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Even if Depp would ultimately be found not guilty, Warner Bros. recast the role for the third film although the actor is already filming scenes for this one.

Why the Fantastic Beasts franchise failed to achieve the success of Harry Potter

Although Harry Potter is one of the most iconic and beloved franchises, Fantastic Beasts had many problems that made it an unpopular series.

Grindelwald and Dumbledore overshadowed Newt Scamander

Pickett the Bowtruckle rides Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in the Fantastic Beasts series.

TRIVIA

  • Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore would play a larger role in both. Fantastic Beasts following.
  • THE Fantastic Beasts the films led up to the great duel between Grindelwald and Dumbledore in 1945, where Dumbledore wins the Elder Wand.

Besides the frequent recastings of Grindelwald, his inclusion in the Fantastic Beasts the narrative also had a negative impact. The first Fantastic Beasts The film was a relatively self-contained story featuring Newt taking his magical beasts on the loose across New York City. It was a charming concept that worked for what it was. However, it started to lose focus as soon as the film introduced Gellert Grindelwald and it never fit well with Newt’s story.. While Grindelwald was active during Newt’s time, the Fantastic Beasts the films should not have become the story they ended up being. Grindelwald is the dark wizard of the era, but his true contemporary was Albus Dumbledore, not Newt.

Like the Fantastic Beasts The films continued, it was less about Newt and more about Grindelwald and Dumbledore because that was the more interesting story. Newt began to be sidelined as the leader of the group. Fantastic Beasts films and in many ways he should have become more of a supporting character who always helped Dumbledore. However, since Rowling wanted to explore the conflict and relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore, the Fantastic Beasts the franchise should have ended after the first film and the wizarding world should have continued with a newly titled film series. Grindelwald was too big of a wizarding world villain for Newt’s character, and it became harder to justify his inclusion in the story as it progressed.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a valuable addition to Harry Potter canon. It explored the American wizarding world and other elements that set the franchise on the path of others like Star Wars and the MCU. Always, the sequels would begin with an identity crisis and behind-the-scenes drama that all revolved around Grindelwald’s character.. Although Grindelwald was an interesting character to explore, and his portrayal in the Fantastic Beasts The film was solid, it had no place in the story set up in the first film.
