CBR has an exclusive first look at Oni Press’ new original series chronicling the events of the Alcatraz Escape. The comics will debut early next year as a special limited series.
Outside of Alcatraz is written by writer Christopher Cantwell (The plastic man, nothing more) with illustrations by Tyler Crook (Harrow County). The first issue of the five-issue limited series Outside of Alcatraz will be double-length, 48 pages, and will feature a variety of special cover variations, seen below. The comics were born from one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century, when three inmates mysteriously escaped from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on June 11, 1962. Despite research and investigation by the FBI, the case remains to date unresolved. Outside of Alcatraz No. 1 will go on sale in March 2025 from Oni Press.

The solicitation for the first issue explains how Outside of Alcatraz will tell how the mysterious events unfolded. “Convicts Frank Morris and Clarence Anglin are stranded in San Francisco after surviving their infamous escape from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in June 1962. They soon meet their gruff and disappointed master, a mysterious young woman who is also on the run from something , and hope to quickly find their way north to the border – if they even make it out of Modesto alive amid a fierce federal manhunt and chance encounters. threaten the desperate convicts, everyone involved is about to discover the same bloody truth: life on the run is a more hellish prison than Alcatraz could ever have been.
Oni Press continues by describing Outside of Alcatraz as a “harrowing epic of killers and convicts every bit as cold as Alcatraz Island itself, told across five sumptuously painted issues by two Eisner-nominated storytellers at the peak of their powers.” The first issue will feature a main cover by series illustrator Tyler Crook and variants by Valeria Burzo, Massimo Carnevale, Oliver Dominquez Hayden Sherman and Cook.

Christopher Cantwell, the creator of television Stop and catch fire and co-showrunner of The Terrors upcoming return to AMC, explained how Outside of Alcatraz will take the events of the mysterious night of the story and push them further. “I have long been obsessed with the details, details and personalities involved in the 1962 Alcatraz escape – the government response and the need for a narrative, the disappearance of the three men who managed to leave the “The nature of the country’s cultural climate at the time, which was about to explode into the radicalism of the mid-to-late 1960s,” Cantwell said, “but Outside of Alcatraz specifically pushes the mystery further.
