Evangelion returns to its original ’90s anime roots with a new recreation of Misato’s iconic car

THE Neon Genesis Evangelion The franchise is best known for its iconic mecha, but those aren’t the only rides in the series. Now another notable vehicle from the series joins a long line of model cars, but it’s not an EVA unit.

The Tomica Premium Unlimited n°08 Rebuilding Evangelion Alpine Renault A310 is based on Misato Katsuragi’s car from the classic anime series. Tomica has released toys for several anime cars and vehicles, and the legendary mecha franchise has now entered the garage. Ironically, despite its designation, the new toy is based on the first iteration of Evangelion and not the most recent.

Misato’s Car from Evangelion Enters Tomica Premium Toy Series

Part of the Tomica Premium Unlimited range, number 8 in the series is an Alpine Renault A310. This is the car that Misato Katsuragi drives in the original Neon Genesis Evangelion animated series, with the car itself notable for being an electric vehicle. The Tomica Premium range takes cars and vehicles from various franchises and recreates them in realistic detail, the previous car being the 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R from 2 Fast 2 Furious. In the case of the blue Renault A310, it emulates all the recognizable aspects of Evangelionincluding custom headlights, engine and Misato’s license plate.

It is one of many Evangelion diecast model cars that will be announced or released within the last year, although they are one of the few to have an actual basis in the series itself. Although it is billed under the title of Rebuilding Evangelion reboot films, Misato drove the car in the original 1990s Evangelion anime, with the reboot allowing him to drive a white Mazda. Misato herself can be seen on the car’s packaging, but the toy vehicle itself unfortunately does not include a depiction of her. It is now available to order internationally for 1,320 yen, or approximately US$8.50, and is expected to ship to customers in February 2025. The new year marks the 30th anniversary of the film’s first release. Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, the new Tomica being just one element of this nostalgia.
