Piccolo stands out as a unique beast among the main cast of Dragon Ball. Since the beginning of Dragon Ball Zfan favorite Namekian has been the only non-Saiyan character who has consistently managed to remain a major part of the series. Yet at the time, he was never a true equal to the main triumvirate of Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan.
One of the main things that sets Piccolo apart from the main Saiyan heroes is his lack of character development. Piccolo hasn’t developed as a character since DBZ’s Saiyan Saga, but Dragon Ball DAIMA has the chance to resolve this issue. Between all the new knowledge the anime provided about the Namekians, the introduction of Neva, and Piccolo’s presence in the Demon Realm, the series did all the necessary setup to finally advance his character.

Dragon Ball rarely took care to develop Piccolo’s character
Piccolo stops developing after the Saiyan saga
During the first two arcs that Piccolo appeared in, he was one of the best roles in Dragon Ball. He was an exceptional antagonist in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament arc, menacing and gleefully sadistic like King Piccolo, but with a bit more depth and martial arts skills that made for a far superior fight against Goku than that of his father. The Saiyan Saga then took advantage of Goku’s choice to spare Piccolo by placing him front and center, giving him a more emotional redemption arc than any in the previous series, and making him one of the main heroes of the arc, alongside Goku and Gohan. From forming an uneasy alliance with Goku to defeat Raditz to training Gohan to sacrificing his life against Nappa, Piccolo goes from being a supervillain looking to take over the world to one of the greatest heroes of the Earth. Her budding friendship with Gohan forms the emotional core of the arc, to the point that it remains one of the most iconic friendships in the franchise, and it is her love and concern for the son of her archenemy that push you to become a better person.
Unfortunately, as Dragon Ball Z in its entirety, Piccolo’s role in history weakens after the Saiyan Saga. He spends most of the Frieza Saga inactive, as he is dead. When he is brought back to life on Namek, the anime does nothing to have him set foot on his people’s home planet for the first time, failing to capitalize on a great opportunity. Despite the power-up he gets from fusing with Nail, Piccolo also doesn’t contribute overall to the fight against Frieza like Krillin or Gohan, and he doesn’t get more development than them, which is unfortunate when the The only characters in this arc who develop are Goku and Vegeta. Piccolo has a similar problem in Cell Saga, where he goes through what should be a significant moment, merging with Kami again, and gets a huge bonus, but he still doesn’t develop as a character, and he still is . He’s not strong enough to beat Android 17, let alone stand up to Cell.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 11 Teases Vegeta’s First Real Fight
The Prince of All Saiyans is finally back in action as he takes on the Tamagami for Dragon Ball in the next exciting episode of Dragon Ball Daima.
Piccolo’s role in the Buu Saga is different from his previous ones, with him acting as a mentor and comedic foil to Goten and Trunks, but despite his more humorous portrayal here, it’s a stretch to call it character development. At most, you could say that part of Kami’s personality was transferred to her when they merged in the previous arc. In Dragon Ball SuperPiccolo is no longer part of the main cast and he only has a significant role in 3 of the series’ 9 major arcs and films.
Even then, he’s only relevant to the Universe 6 saga because his defeat in the Tournament of Destroyers is what exposes Frost as a villain, and he contributes less to the Universal Survival Saga than the rest of the Universe 7 team, with the exception of Tien Shinhan. His only real starring role was in Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes and, even then, Piccolo is just reliving his glory days in DBZ. Piccolo acts as a cute and fun mentor to Pan, he has a supposedly emotional moment that falls flat, and he gets a random power-up that makes him almost as strong as the Saiyans, but not strong enough to beat Pan’s main villain . the film, all without ever growing as a character.
Piccolo got stuck on the sidelines in Dragon Ball DAIMA
Piccolo has only just become involved in the main plot of DAIMA
Before its release, no one expected Piccolo to be a main character in Dragon Ball DAIMA. When he appeared in the opening credits at the start of Episode 2 alongside Goku, Glorio, Panzy, and Shin, it was a welcome sight for fans, and it was already obvious why he would be involved in the narrative. Episode 1 already introduced Neva, the former Namekian who created the Dragon Balls of the Demon Realm, and the Tamagamis, and who remained in the Demon Realm when the rest of his people fled it. So, it came as no shock when Piccolo expressed a desire to meet Neva and travel to the Demon Realm alongside Vegeta and Bulma to do so.

Dragon Ball DAIMA: Majin Kuu is an absolute joke
Majin Kuu is supposed to be stronger than Majin Buu, but no one would guess that from his first battle in Dragon Ball DAIMA.
Unfortunately, Piccolo has barely done anything memorable since episode 2. He was absent for the first few episodes after Goku and Shin left for the Demon Realm with Glorio, he did nothing to help his group reaching the Demon Realm when he reappeared. , and the most important thing he did in episode 9 was put Vegeta back in front of a group of angry Majin. It was only in episode 10 that Piccolo finally starts to show why he’s here Dragon Ball DAIMAwhich makes the next few episodes the watershed moment when it comes to using the backdrop of the Demon Realm as a way to finally give him some long-denied character development.
DAIMA has the potential to finally advance Piccolo’s personal journey
The Demon Realm is the perfect place for Piccolo to grow as a person
More than Goku, Vegeta or Bulma, Piccolo has a legitimate reason to be present. Dragon Ball DAIMA. The anime cleared up the long-standing confusion behind his origins by reiterating that all Namekians originate from the Demon Realm, giving Piccolo a connection to it that his friends lack. In episode 10, this connection is finally explored, as Piccolo sets foot on the home planet Namek and experiences a moment of pleasure, before Nahare informs him of the Namekians’ dark history as slaves of the former supreme demon king, Abura. Then, at the end of the episode, as if waiting for Piccolo to arrive, Neva returns, after having been absent from the series since episode 3.
Dragon Ball DAIMA is somewhat limited in how much he can develop Piccolo, since he is set before Dragon Ball Super. However, there’s still plenty of growth Piccolo can undergo without contradicting anything that comes next. ALWAYS in the timeline. While the Frieza saga missed its opportunity to meaningfully connect Piccolo to his home, ALWAYS don’t repeat that mistake, and Neva is here to make sure of it. Unlike Nail, who was just an excuse to give Piccolo a power-up, Neva is a real character, with a backstory and the potential to reshape Piccolo’s self-perception.

If Neva is more heroic than not, Piccolo might finally find a Namekian friend and a sense of acceptance of who he is.similar to Goku’s adoption of his Saiyan heritage in the Frieza Saga. Alternatively, if Neva turns out to be a villain, Piccolo’s story could lead one of him to accept that he will forever be isolated from his people and learn to appreciate Earth as his one true home.
