Doctor Who: Russell T Davies answers David Tennant’s future in the series

The Fourteenth Doctor may be coming to an end in a Doctor Who special, but Russell T. Davies still hasn’t ruled out the future of Earthlings.

In the Doctor Who universe, the Doctor’s ability to regenerate will always keep fans on the edge of their seats, wondering who will take on who. Recently, series showrunner Russell T Davies has been open about David Tennant’s future as the Doctor. Although Tennant returns as a new incarnation of the Time Lord to lead three years of specials, with Catherine Tate playing his old friend Donna Noble, the Doctor’s time seems to be over.

Nkuti Gatwa era

The current focus of the series is on Nkuti Gatwa, who plays the Fifteenth Doctor. In the final special, titled “Giggle”, an unprecedented event occurs: the Fourteenth Doctor (Tennant) splits into two, creating the Fifteenth Doctor (Gatwa). While Gatwa embarks on new adventures, Tennant stays on Earth, joining the Noble family and living in France.

Although Tenant could continue his adventures, Davies decided to focus on the new Doctor. This allows Gatwa to lead the series and leave his mark on the audience. Although it’s fun to follow the adventures of the Fourteenth Doctor, focusing on the Fifteenth is the best fit for the series at this point.

Whoniverse expansion

Davies has revealed plans to expand the universe, but it looks like the Fourteenth Doctor won’t get a spin. Although characters such as Rose Noble (Yasmin Finney) are expected to return in season 14, Tenant will be limited to mentions rather than appearances on screen.

Davies has shown his willingness to revisit previous versions of the Time Lord by reintroducing a number of classic Doctors through the TARDIS spin-off Tales. However, with the Fourteenth Doctor’s firm decision to take a permanent break from world-saving, it’s clear we shouldn’t expect to see Tennant in the role again anytime soon. Although, there is some comfort in knowing that the character has found the family he thought he would never have again.
