Sean Levy was waiting for Hugh Jackman’s call until the last minute to work on Deadpool and Wolverine.
The development of Deadpool and Wolverine was not an easy road. In a recent interview with CBR’s Kevin Polowy, Sean Levy shared the challenges he faced. “It’s deceptively difficult,” Levy says of his creative process. “I’m sure you’ve heard this, but Ryan and I, along with our colleagues, spent months trying to find a story that was true to Deadpool’s DNA and worthy of the MCU. That’s a tough goal to reach. It’s a little over the top, you want it to be real and grounded but it’s worthy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I’d say it was harder than I expected.”
Just as they were about to throw in the towel, Levy and Reynolds prepared to speak with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to announce that the project would have to wait. “He had a pitch call with Kevin in August 2022, and Ryan and I said, ‘Kevin, we really want to do a Deadpool movie, but it’s not happening right now. Maybe we’ll try again in a year or two,’ Levy explained.
Hugh Jackman’s miraculous rescue
But before that crucial call, something unexpected happened. Hugh Jackman called Vee and Reynolds and expressed his interest in joining the project as Wolverine. This call changed everything. “With Wolverine and Deadpool together, that’s when we knew the movie had a reason to exist,” Levy added.
Levy concludes, “That’s why we feel that there is something akin to destiny in this film. “Three friends in real life, who have been friends for a long time, and everything is somehow fixed at this moment.”
