DC’s All In Initiative Comes for Batman in Bold New Issue

The following contains spoilers for Batman #153, on sale now.

Whoever said you only have one chance to make a first impression obviously hasn’t been reading comics long enough, because in the comic book world there are often MULTIPLE chances to make a first printing…well, if you’re successful enough the first time the comic company lets you do the subsequent printings, of course. You see, in the comic book world there is a “jump on it” question, one designed to be treated as if someone samples your comic with this issue, they would hopefully be forced to continue to read it. Obviously, EVERY issue of a comic has to be compelling enough to make people want to read more of the story, but the “jump on” issue is undoubtedly a distinctive story SPELL designed to make things as simple as possible for a new reader to follow, while still having enough engaging ideas that readers will want to keep reading. DC’s “All In” initiative is based on this sort of thing for its entire line of comics starting in October, and Batman #153 is a perfect example of how to jump on the issue.

The cover of Batman #153

Batman #153 is from writer Chip Zdarsky, artist Jorge Jiménez, colorist Tomeu Morey, and letterer Clayton Cowles, and it’s the second “jump on” point in Zdarsky and Jiménez’s run, following their first issue in Batman #125, which was also a great introduction to their particular talents.

How does Gotham City change in this issue?

The major changes to Gotham City are that Wayne Enterprises has gone all out to do good with its money, while Riddler has opened a security company that has taken the city by storm.

How do the Riddler’s plans ruin Batman’s life?

Batman realizes that the Riddler can’t live up to his new venture, but by the end of the issue, the Riddler appears to be bothering Batman in a big way by bringing back Bruce Wayne’s…brother?!
