Panini Comics’ DC Finest line features a collection of stories from some of the most notable classic DC Comics team-ups

Panini Comics surprises us with the publication of a volume entitled DC’s Best Team-Ups: Race to the End of Timea volume that collects some of the team’s stories (the concept of team up) more memorable than DC Universe since the end of the seventies.

Team uptwo better than one

The first thing that stands out about the stories in this volume is its approach. Instead of focusing on a single hero, this is about looking at the great characters of the DC Comics (Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman and company) join forces to address a threat they cannot address separately. That team up It’s the hook, but what makes it fun is the context. They are stories from almost fifty years ago, when comics still had that mix of light adventure, classic superhero optimism and some narrative madness, which today are as fascinating as they are strange.

Batman vs. Superman

Two very different but complementary blocks are grouped within the volume. On the one hand we have the material DC Comics presents, Where Kal El He is the protagonist and aims to collaborate with other heroes in stories that mix action and humor. In this part of The man of tomorrow What we find is a great desire to have fun. The tone is much more relaxed than usual in other stories of the character of those years.

Then there is the phase of Jim Aparo In The brave and the bold, with the Dark Knight as a central axis in a darker environment where urban heroes will begin to accept that their world is not as black and white as they thought. This combination of light and shadow gives the volume variety and not monotony, although it also serves to compare both collections and see the virtues and defects of each, for example the fact that Superman is visually much superior to Batman, and that this one has more complex, interesting and less colorful plots than the other.

so much nostalgia

As for the graphics section, the edition that includes this material has good paper that allows you to enjoy the classic colors without losing their magic. This is ideal for enjoying wonderful classic cartoonists like the master Jose Luis Garcia Lopez. Seeing Superman fly alongside the Flash in a two-episode story that has become part of the foundation of DC Comics since its conception seems to transport the reader to simpler, more naïve times.

Now, the reader looking for deep, modern stories or stories with long arcs will be seriously disappointed by this volume. Here there are plots that are resolved in 20 pages, situations that violate all the laws of common sense and characters with a surprising ease in changing their minds without even remotely acceptable justification. This may seem light-hearted and even childish compared to the epic of current times, but everything has its moment. And the moment of this volume is when the reader wants to enjoy something fun and simple with the characters they grew up with.

So why is this volume worth it? Because it is a piece of history of the DC Universe that allows you to see many of its great icons working together, without complications, with good pacing, competent drawing and quality nostalgia. If you’re looking for a comic to enjoy while breathing that air vintage from the Bronze Age of comics, this volume is a safe bet.
