Big Game review by Mark Millar and Pepe Laraz

Panini Comics brings back Mark Millar and Pepe Larraz in the big game, Millarworld End Game.

Mark Millar is one of those people in the comedy world who never leaves anyone indifferent. For some he is not that big and exaggerated, for others he is a great writer, but no one can deny that the man left his mark on the industry. His time at Marvel and DC has produced hits like The Ultimates, Old Man Logan, Civil War or Superman: Red Son, comedies that reach audiences who don’t often read comics.

On his own label, the Scotsman has found major success with titles such as Wanted, Kick-Ass and Nemesis. Even film adaptations have been successful, despite occasional flops like Jupiter’s Legacy (Kick-Ass and Kingsman). Although many of his works can be classified as blockbusters, few are able to generate their own publishing houses, create universes and work, so it is undeniable that they know how to act to become a relevant person. Today we examine one of his latest Millerworld projects, The Big Game, where all the series from this world come together, acting like Avengers: Endgame. The comic is published in Spain by Panini Comics.

The Millarverse gathered together

In the year In 1986, supervillains killed the world’s superheroes in one night on the orders of the leader, making people forget the existence of these heroes. Now, you know the heroes of comics, series and movies as villains secretly taking over the world. In the year In 2008, a man named Dave Liszewski called himself Kick-Ass while roaming the streets. Seeing that the past may repeat itself, Wesley Gibson, the son of that evil leader, decides to kill all the heroes before they come together to change the current situation.

From this premise, the comic takes us on an adventure that sees giant battles, aliens, time travel, magic and espionage, all typical superhero comics adventures. A tribute to the genre, rather than being unrelated isolated events, Millar works well, perhaps in a rushed way at times, but one that reads comfortably. Here he shows in which areas the Scotsman is most comfortable, with pure and simple entertainment. We don’t get a deep story with a lot of details, we read a fun and very entertaining comic.

Although this is the story around which all the Millarworld series come together, it is important to make it clear that it is not necessary to read the other series first. Undoubtedly, knowing Wanted, Kick-Ass, The Magic Order, or Chrononauts will help you understand the many references that appear in the five issues, but a new reader can easily follow the story. The most important information is already told in the story. Millarworld is a vast universe, but Millar created this story with his readers and new readers in mind, as this is a wonderful entry point into the universe.

Millar can be criticized for many things, but no one will deny that one of his greatest virtues is that he surrounded himself with great artists like Pepe Laraz. The man from Madrid shows that he is made of a different material, because the picture is amazing, raising this tribute to the genre to the highest levels. Drawing on the character designs as well as the scenic locations and action scenes of the people selling them. If you see this comic in your regular bookstore or department store, it’s impossible not to see Laraz’s work. We have to praise the work of colorist Giovanna Nero who created a perfect turban with Laraz.

Panini Comics’ Big Game Edition.

Panini printed this comic exactly in a publisher’s standard format. Measuring 17 x 27.5 cm, the hardcover features five issues that comprise the story, as well as a series of additional covers for each issue. There is also a section where information is provided about the artists who worked on this work. With a total of 152 pages, this comic retails for €24.00.

Big Game is a hilarious and epic homage to the superhero genre. A crossover of the entire Millarworld that works perfectly for new readers. A story that is pure entertainment thanks to the amazing illustrations by Pepe Laraz manages to sell the comic with ease. Highly recommended for those superhero fans.
