Dennis O’Neil He is primarily responsible for bringing the entire mythology of the late 20th century Batman film saga to comics in a volume now published by ECC Ediciones.
Adapting from screen to cartoon is usually not a very pleasant task, as in the vast majority of cases it results in forgettable works. Although the reverse path in recent years has brought great joy to the world of entertainment, comics based on films are usually used solely to exploit franchises. But there are times when these works are shrouded in an atmosphere of legend, and this also happens with the newly published volume. ECC Editions under the title of Batman: The Movie Saga.
Tim Burton Creates Gotham City
In 1989, just over a decade later My Friend Christopher Reeve proved that a superhero movie could be a viable and successful project, the premiere of the film directed by Tim Burton’s World which has been unleashed all over the world Batmania. Regardless of its quality, there is no doubt that it was a brutal success that gave the character not only a prestige that lasts to this day, but also a label of “money-making machine” that led to its exploitation in all sectors without rest since that year.
An emerging director, an established star as the main villain, an attractive young woman in the stigmatized role of a damsel in distress, and a controversial protagonist were responsible for this event, and for the film’s comedy it was necessary to seek out equally respected authors in its genre. medium. Dr. Jerry Ordway And Dennis O’Neil They were chosen to convey the story of Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson And Kim Basinger to its original medium.
This is an almost literal translation, working on the initial scripts of the film, which gives us the opportunity to see small changes compared to what we finally saw in the film. O’Neil’s work is almost automatic, but it is the work of an Ordway who borders on photorealism and who characterizes all the characters very well, managing to perfectly portray Keaton even when he wears the mask.
With the second delivery it is Steve Erwin (inked on this occasion by the legendary Jose Luis Garcia Lopez) who does a job that is aesthetically less faithful to what was seen in Batman Returns gets a much more interesting result, very visually appealing. O’Neil on this occasion does a less functional job and tries to give the comic its own entity, and he appreciates this.
Joel Schumacher Transform Gotham City
Val Kilmer It was imposed as the new Batman in the third chapter of the saga, this time with Joel Schumacher as the new director. The tone he gave to his films was not as revolutionary as Burton’s, but it was certainly interesting and it was a way to take the character on another path. Unfortunately his two films will not be remembered as great masterpieces of the seventh art…
Despite this, here we can enjoy some villains that seem to work better in the comics than in the real images, perhaps due to the excessively cartoonish nature with which they were made: Two dears, Enigma, Mr. Cold And Poison Ivy. This does not happen with the new heroes, however, Robin And Bat-girlof which we have here one of the worst versions ever made. This negative point is only surpassed by the incredibly abrupt and disappointing ending of the first part of this diptych, which seems to have been resolved without desire or time.
As for the graphic part, Michal Dutkiewicz was in charge of transporting Batman Forever to the comic, and here we would talk about the weakest work in terms of graphics of these works so far. However, when georgeclooney dons the cloak and hood (and nipple armor) for the fourth episode and Rodolfo Damaggio he is responsible for the artistic section, it is once again a new decline, especially due to the color Pat Garrahyfull of horrible gradients.
In short, with this volume we have a story that will be appreciated by the most faithful followers of the character and all his mythology, especially by those who appreciated that tetralogy of films from the late twentieth century. As a collector’s item it is remarkable, and the first episode even breathes a certain tone of legend that makes it even more precious, but beyond this, no one expects to find in this volume a jewel of the ninth art…
